In The fall 2025 Common Ground GPC newsletter Brad Wursten's article said the following; "The visitors slowly shuffled past the giant vegetable display gaping at the monstrosities neatly arranged on the black clothed table. Seeing as the Dutch are notoriously frugal and stingy it was inevitable that I was constantly asked if everything was edible or not. When I confirmed that most were edible, except for the cucumbers, several walked away in disdain as if I was personally responsible for the demise of the planet for growing a non-beneficial crop" I thought it was funny and I appreciated that he brought that point to light. I have been asked this same question many times before. "what do you do with it?" It has always struck me as odd that because this is an agricultural endeavor, people assume that there has to be a practical purpose for it. I wouldn't question someone about what they harvest from their lawn, or what did they "harvest" from their day on the golf course, their hike in the woods, etc. WHy is it that there has to be a practical use for these giants that we grow? It is like we have to validate the point of growing these things. Why go to the moon? Why climb Mt everest? These are strange times indeed! At the very least it is super annoying that we feel we have to justify what are hobby is. It is clear that all of us in this crazy hobby... well...lets just say we don't speak the same language as some of the general public.
