Day 70: F: 2154 Sperry '23 (x M: 2670 Thompson '24)
OTT = 432" Est. Weight = 1,706 pounds Avg. over last 10 days = 22.9 pounds per day
Hard to find different angles of the pumpkin to keep the posts interesting;-)
There is some cantaloupe developing in certain areas while others are showing signs of potentially getting some orange color to them. The pumpkin does some deep ribs which can be a bit concerning, but so far, it is holding together. The weight gain per day has been a slow and steady decline which is good to see as there is no erratic changes to the pace.
Days are getting shorter and cooler, so attempts have been made to add some light and heat, but there is no changing the aging of the plant and pumpkin. At this point the goal is consistency and the hope is still for a personal best.
Key aspects this time of year are prevention and planning. The goal is to prepare for the many potential season ending scenarios and this comes down to consistent scouting. Just having eyes on the plant and pumpkin is key to being able to catch something that does not look right. This could be nothing, or you could catch the early stages of an issue, when it is typically easier to correct. Planning for fall-time and doing the best to prepare at least what a grower has control over is important.
This is a great time of year to check your lifting equipment and plan, keep scouting the stem, crown and blossom end of the pumpkin. Also, watch the plant to see if some leaves seem to be maturing at a quicker rate and inspect them carefully. When it comes to spraying only apply something when it is necessary and spray with a targeted purpose. Do not spray just because it is Monday as this can help you maintain plant health for as long as possible.
Best of luck to everyone!
