Matt had some scientific explanation involving undifferentiated cells or something, I was too distracted by the horrible smell. Whatever It is, it was the start of the rot in that vine which makes sense if you think of it. I cut that secondary back all the way to the main and the cross section looked perfectly clean so hopefully that's the end of that...
