My Next few entries are not pumpkin related but are ramblings from a horticultural rabbit hole that I went down that ended with a question about AI. So don't say I didn't warn you!
I just watched this interesting video YouTube about starting fruit trees from seed. I agree with this guy that Peaches usually come out great when you start them from pits. I have grown many from pits and they have all had excelllent eating qualities and grow into very large productive peach trees. I would imagine the same would be true for Japanese plums and other stone fruit that don't require a polllinator.
Apples however are a different story. (or at least I have always been told). It has been suggested in pretty much all literature that an apple will typically produce a fruit that is usually only good for the cider press. It would be rare for a seedling apple to produce a fruit that has good table eating qualities. (or at least that is what the experts tell us.). I will take there word for it on that one.... because I have never actually grown out an apple seedling and seen what the fruit are like. Normally I like to test out this sort of horticultural dogma, and find out for myself what the truth is.... Maybe someday I will.
However,I have tasted the apples from wild (seedling apples) before and it's true that many arent' as good as the ones you buy at the store. Often they ripen and turn meally really quickly or just don't have great flavor. (I have also tasted some that are respectable.) Michael Pollan suggests in his book 'omnivores Dilemna' that the american folk hero "Johnny Appleseed" was actually helping to spread an alcoholic beverage across the country in the form of hard cider across the frontier. Johnny wasn't grafting his apple trees, so they were all wild cards as to there table value. In fact many of todays popular varieties were found growing in the wild. For example the 'Yellow delicious' was from a Wild tree in West Va. Possibly a descendant or even perhaps a tree that was sold by Johnny Appleseed.
to be continued......
