I just learned of the passing of Dave McCallum through the GPC Common Ground Newsletter and wanted to express my condolences. I had the privilege of meeting Dave 5 years ago at the GPC Big Show when it was in Ontario – though fortunately I’ve grown up since this photo was taken and the horrible braces are long gone…. Well, one evening, we found ourselves seated at the same table, and I was mentioning how I came from the neighboring province to learn all that I could about growing ‘the big one’. Hearing this, Dave gladly spent the large part of that evening sharing all his knowledge & expertise with me on this subject. Though I met him only once and it was many years ago, it’s impossible to forget such kind acts as this. Back then, at only 14 years of age, it was such a huge deal to me – being able to spend an entire evening talking to one of the greats – and a GPC Hall of Fame member on top of that!! The subsequent year (2018), I broke my personal best at 1369.5 pounds (my last year growing). Though I only got to know Dave over the course of a few hours, I still remember parts of that conversation 5 years later. I’m sure he made an impact on the giant pumpkin growing community larger than he ever knew. My deepest condolences to Dave’s family and to all those who got to know him throughout the years.
