I got tired of waiting for it to rain to get my winter rye going, so I watered the garden space a few days ago and the rye sprouted right away. Another watering today, and the rye seemed to grow in front of my eyes.
The alfalfa pellets I broadcast over the soil didn't hurt, either. They help provide nitrogen and other nutrients to improve the soil and feed earthworms, who in turn aerate the soil and improve soil biology.
I also use the pellets in my compost pile.
