I just wanted to show the hilling effect. I have been in the past manually creating hills up to my knees, but now, my son uses a furrowing attachment on his tiller to help with my arthritis in the knees. I still use a garden rake to bring the soil up to their mounds throughout the season. I don't provide much water to the potatoes and sweet potatoes. They are searching deep now for water which is what I want instead of near the surface. I have had pretty good success with this method and have won ribbons at the Sandwich Fair in the past for their size and uniformity. They love a lower end pH and LOTS of aged compost. I also add in ALOT of saved up kitchen scraps, shredded newspaper and wood shavings. Also, wait to fertilize until the plants flower. Never, ever water over head!! Blight is a big problem for the late season tubers, so be gentle!
