I was very fortunate to be able to interact with a Vietnam Marine veteran who shared his experience of recovering the dead, the wounded and protecting troops. I also spoke with a Korean Naval veteran who shared of his fear serving as a 17 year old in a country he did not know much about before his draft number was selected. He spoke of the constant fear of many missing in action, killed by the enemy and frequent alerts, while at sea. Another army veteran of the Vietnam War spoke of the horrible treatment received on his return to the US and having tomatoes and eggs thrown at him and fellow comrades. He stated, "he served because he had military family members who taught him that it is an honor to be an American and it is the right thing to do for his country". His assignment was to run midnight surveillance and spoke of the constant challenge of not knowing who to trust in villages since he witnessed friends deceived and killed by unsuspecting children and females armed with explosives.
