Too much water / rotten roots.
A dampening fungus I'm guessing perhaps also caused also by inconsistent temps. It did not freeze - just looks like it.
Having the same problem in the peppers and tomatoes. But we don't need 40 tomato and pepper plants. Those which germ. will be the ones we grow. Also lost were all three of my (811 Gerhardt x self) Schweigerts. Bummer.
