Hey Folks
First of all, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the donations from the giant pumpkin community. As a whole, you all are out-giving 'friends' on FB and co-workers. It says so much for this community and your hearts.
I posted this picture because this sort of box is what my son Brad came home with when he left the Navy after 8 and 1/2 years of service. It was full of pills for everything imaginable. This is how the military has been treating our vets and specifically, depression and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Many of those pills have warning labels cautioning the patient against suicidal thoughts and feelings. The very thing they are designed to prevent.....how sad is that? Clearly they are/were ill-equipped to do anything. The results on our vets have been nothing short of catastrophic.
Brad was a Navy Corpsman assigned to the U.S. Marines as a field corpsman. He served with 2/7 for an extended period. This unit has been hit by suicide at an extreme rate. Brad lost 3 fellow marines in a week at one point. It about crushed him.
So this is why I am participating in the Out of the Darkness Walk on May 20th. Its a 16-18 mile walk with survivors, family members and other walkers who have been impacted by suicide and want to raise awareness. I set a modest goal of raising $1,000 and thanks in large part to bp.com members, surpassed that goal. So I changed the goal to $2,000 and am getting close. I may change it again because, well, stopping just doesn't seem right!
Here's a link to my page. Please donate if you can. Thank you!
