In 2016 I took the year off and grew cover crops except for a smallish 300 SF sectionwhere I planted a 1059 cross that I wanted to see shape and color. Everything grew nicely and I paid little attention to the plant or fruit. At the end of the season I pulled the plant but I did so very carefully. I wanted to learn moreabout what was growing underground. The rake in the image is a 6 ft rake. Take a look at a vigorous root system that grew from the stump directly opposite the direction of the main vine. It went out over 8 feet traveling under the surface at 5-8 inches or so.So, Iintend to leave a bitmore room betweenplant sitesthis year and break the habit of walking and compacting soil in the area behind the stump
