So, I've had pretty good luck at growing my pumpkins with the main vine terminated and all growth behind the pumpkin. It was suggested to me by a couple well respected Heavy Hitters years ago (like 10) and I was experiencing stem and vine issues as a newer grower...mostly because of all the growth after the set pumpkin.

Couple years ago when we grew 1126 lbs and 1124 lbs, the bigger pumpkin was with main vine terminated and extra side vine growth, while the 1124 pumpkin had main vine past the fruit...12% theory gets thrown out the window here!!

For me, I have limited space and like to squish in 2 pumpkins so I need to be creative with the secondaries as well as the main vine.

Hope this helps Hobbit and Joe Coyote...
