I'm a trench digger...I like to pre-dig landing spots in trenches for all the secondaries, and when they lay down and roots start to show under/over/on the side...then I cover them with soil.

Also, for my area on the Coast and in the Mountains, we constantly have whirling winds that switch direction and without burying my vines and using bamboo to stabilize my plants, it would be difficult to grow. I also cover the main vine as it roots, but uncover as the pumpkin stats to grow and naturally lift the vine back up a bit.
