Further investigation has revealed that the lobes on the 1623 are severely dis formed. This is probably why the petals wouldn't open correctly. Referring back to my disastrous 2012 season, my experience has been that blossoms like this almost never develop into a mature pumpkin. Looks like I am going to have to move to a fruit on a secondary vine. I don't think I will be setting a personal best this year.
