I'm using a technique this year - we'll call it back-door root farming. Here I have removed a big piece of plywood to illustrate and underneath is straw which I keep wet always. This area is just behind the stump of the pumpkin. As you will see in the next picture,lifting the straw will show a network of roots, which I do my best to feed the best natural fertilizers.
