After a long winter of planning and anticipation, the patch work has finally begun!
I will be expanding from approx 350 square feet last year, up to around 750 square feet. As part of the expansion, I also want to improve my sub soil. I have pretty heavy soil, and it doesn't help that just 9" down it's compacted and filled with gravel. So, I'm going to take the top surface off by hand, till in some peat, compost, vermiculite, and gypsum, then cover with my topsoil and finish the top layer with some of the same. I'm hoping the resulting soil will allow for optimum root growth.
