Today began the winter work on the pumpkin patch for 2013. I was going to have a lot of fence repairs to do anyway, but Hurricane Sandy made sure I will be busy this winter. I want to get at least the poles replaced and the chicken wire done around the bottom before we get any snow. The deer fence might wait until spring, there's always the chance of a heavy ice storm here in Feb. or early March so I might as well wait until after that. I'm making several changes to the dome structures too to make the cover last longer. Replacing the bamboo ridge pole with a metal pipe, taking out a bunch of rusty bolts that are doing nothing but rub holes in the row cover as it slides over them and adding a few ropes here and there to stabilize the cover when it is really windy. I am determined to keep the covers in one piece until the end next year. We will see.
