At the south end of the patch, I have a row of soybeans.
The soybeans have little things on their roots called nodules, which make the nitrogen more useable to the plant. And since they generally prduce more than the host plant can use, they leave the soil with a slightly higher nitrogen level.
The idea behind this is that next year, the stumps will be planted where the soybeans were, giving them easy acess to nitrogen when they are smaller.
