in the meantime, i have 3 very nice football size pumpkins on the vine. only one on a secondary off the main, and the other two on the main secondaries off the stump. if i have to, i will cut the main off and protect the stump (if the rot continues) to feed the main secondaries..... which is almost 1/2 the vine in foliage. but even though things are bad, the surgery so far seems to work. from now on i will expose the stump and main to sunlight and protect them more than anything else. my pumpkins have a white sheet over them..... no more houses!(thanks pap for the info on your tips and tricks posts) sunlight is natures fungicide. this is another huge learning curve for me this year. first was slow and steady..... second is proactive with cracks and splits and fungicides/pesticides. 3rd... if in doubt explore and dont rely on "she'll be right" i used to worry about the leaves and the pumpkin. now its stump 1st, main second, leaves 3rd....
then.... enjoy looking after the pumpkin.
hopefully i have a positive next week
