I have a new lighting programme for the onions this year which will start some time (I’m not saying when) after they have been planted in their final positions. It’s not some whacky idea I have dreamt up but it is based on all the information I have found from experiments on photoperiodism. I have spent weeks researching this and I mean weeks so I quietly tried one plant this year and it showed me exactly what I wanted to see. My two worries this year are plants that get stuck in the neck and the penicillium problem I have had for the last couple of years. Now, you lot who have read my diary for I think six years, know that I normally tell the whole story about our patch good or bad, but this will have to remain a secret for the time being. I’ve put a huge amount of effort in to this and I would like at least one year on my own.
