I’ve had a torrid time with the onions and after stripping a load of leaves off managed to save eight plants. After taking the leaves off I lost between 1.5 to 2 inches of the circumference and the plants immediately decided not to throw up any more leaves. The plant pathologist found no bacterial problems but did isolate a Penicillium species which is the most probable cause. I have given myself a pat on the back, as last year when I had the same problem I put in my diary that I felt that that was the problem. The biggest bulb is 25.5inches in cir
