We are tinkering with being market growers or something of the sort. This is part of the butternut squash area... about 1/3 acre in total . The strategy is to avoid erosion and dust problems by growing in the remaining stubble of the winter annuals with drip irrigation. Summer weeds don't grow here if there is no irrigation. Each "hill" has 15 gallons of compost "double dug" in.
Hopefully, next year we can shift the drip a few feet, one way or the other, and do new holes with the same crop.
