success!!! i finally have a tomato keeper so far on my 14' gordon graham tomato plant and one on the 15' big zac plant next to it after the help from tom p. and his cal-mag and tomato blend drenches. too much rain this year and the sloping corner by those 2 plants i feel leached the calcium out of the soil. a local garden supply store owner said the rains this year have had many growers losing tomatoes to blossom end rot from calcium and micronutrient deficiencies. i also limited all 5 plants down to one on each plant for the fall weighoff. sadly no megablooms, but if one shows i still have a little window of time to make it a keeper if it pops this week. i found a 100 dollar for first and 75 buck second place for a tomato weigh off running all season til oct 10th at pesche's garden store in mt prospect by work. i told my buddy from work and he took a 5.58 timm x self tomato from the plant i gave him and he is leading at 2.73 lbs and they took his pic and all and it made his day. i told him i just snipped all suckers and will terminate the stalks and continue topping the plants the rest of the way and limit to one tomato per plant with monster plants so i hope i can catch him. got another one on the 5.58 x self looking good over 15" already and is the same long fanning wide shape as his 2.73 i got to say that i got at least 10 people this year hooked with many more willing to try next year. i am going to talk with mitchell's meat market about possible working with them and the city of joliet for a summer long weigh off next year like pesche's in mt prospect and get more people involved locally and into the gtg.
