i have had to deal with a small split running with the vine at a secondary union on my 991 plant about 2' from the stump. it has remained covered and dry and a fan on it but keeps butterflying open slowly with time as the main grows larger in that area. sometimes it weeps as it splits. there has been a fan on it has been addressed with captan for over a month. i just got done cleaning it this morning and checked later to dab up a few juices that usually come after a cleaning and reapplication of captan. after removing some juices i realized the split barely made it into the hollow chamber and the juices are dripping into the hollowed out area. not good. so i took my pocket knife and cut a small hole into the chamber underneath this area where the lowest point of the main is right there for drainage. captan reapplied and the fan and sun are drying it out. the liquid that came out the bottom was clear with no browning color at all. there is no rot at the split and hopefully it will just put a minor dent in the stump flow. only about a teaspoon of clear liquid came running out the bottom hole which wasn't too bad. need to keep it clean and stopping rot on and in the main. i can't find any browning yet or softening of the main anywhere around or near it so hopefully i put in the exit drainage hole for any juices building up in the healing process internally just in the nick of time. the flesh from the small hole i made on the bottom was healthy which is good. it is always something but i think if i can keep it from rotting and still chugging for the next 20 days or more i will still have a chance at some very big numbers even if i do lose the stump. i would lose only one secondary on each side and the stump if it rots. the split was there before the pumpkin even set, so the split to this point hasn't impacted growth since the pumpkin set. getting pretty good at dealing with the headaches now. lol. i will take a pic soon.
