this sucks. i found this today on the 1147 under a buried section of main. on a nice cool morning i decided to get caught up on some weeding. my union is on stirke and all of chicago's operators and laborers went on strike together today so i have the whole day and week to play in the patch until the strike gets resolved. while weeding along the main of the 1147 i uncovered a section that had more dirt still on it then i like and uncovered it to find girdled section of main vine that is somewhat soft about 2 feet in front of the pumpkin between the pumpkin and the stump. it does not look good. i have put some captan on it but i think it is too late as this section sat in saturated soil too long for the past 2 weeks of rain. the pumpkin slowed down a bit the past 2 days and i attributed it to the cooler nights and days. the pumpkin is still sittling at 82.5" circ today on day 19, but i have to think that this narrow section of vine that is already somewhat soft to the touch is definately trouble for long term growth and poundage. very disappointing. both other mains are fine after checking for any others still buried and uncovering any dirt still on the mains. but this is definately a bummer. there is plenty of plant behid the pumpkin to help it grow all season, but looking at the massive vine and stump that will probably go mostly un-used for a heavy juice flow blows. i am covering the area with a small table and putting a fan on it, but it looks a little late. better news is that the 991 is chugging nicely still and the 873 stem cracking has stopped so all is not lost. 2 chances at glory still and Kenny on the 1147 will be grown with full effort for one of the other weigh offs, but i do not expect any new personal bests with this one after discovering this girdled soft section of the main. doh!!!!!
