Last night I performed a little surgery: The 1280 Popp had a ribbon vine (it was like 2 vines fused together), so near the meristem bundle I tried to snip it into a single. It was looking a bit unhappy this evening when I looked at it, but it may perk up in the next day or two. This is my hugest plant, so I'd like to keep it. Don Young told me to pull it, but I saw on one of Joel Holland's video footage of a plant that had the same type of vine. He set a pumpkin on it then terminated the main vine at the pumpkin, and grew a 1000+ pounder. So, I don't know what to do...any advice would be appreciated. In the meantime, I'll just watch it to see how the main further develops to see if my surgery was a success. Another option would be to grow a seconday as a new main. The final option would be to pull the plant and transplant the 1191 Barker into the spot. I now see the value of planting 2 starts together, then culling the weaker of the two. Next year I'll go with that plan.
