the patch was cleared today by a couple friends out of work. the prize money was a bonus, so why not share the wealth and take the load of my back. i paid them handsomely and when the patch dries out, it will be tilled. i will have a soil test done and make some ammendments this fall, but ted krueggers onganimix compost will wait til the spring. gonna throw down a cover crop, which kind i am not sure yet. most likely winter rye. here is a pic of the 1185 stump. very aggressive plant. neither seed cross i made this year will be planted by myself next year. with the 1161 abort problems crossed into the light 1385 and the light 1385 genetics crossed into the 1185, not sure i trust either cross. but i am growing an 1147 shenoha 2008 in 2010 based on meat's job with a quarter size plant from disease and still producing the 24% heavy 873 naylor 2009. the 1147 was a very aggressive backup plant and meat said his 1147 plant was a beast. thanks meat for proving out the 1147. looks like i will go with an 1147 shenoha, a 985 werner, and a 901 hunt next year. i know the 1385 grew christy's world record and have done some great things, but the dissappointment of light will not make me repeat that path. george's 1385 went 11% light and i see on the gpc page that russ's 1385 also went 14% light like mine. tough pill to swallow. i am in no way disrespecting the world record producing seed, i just have to move on and try not set a trend of lightness in my pumpkins. with the big 901 hunt going 19% heavy for a pumpkin of that size, i would be stupic not to try it when i have the seed in my freezer. my 1147 shenoha that produced a 24% heavy has me excited, and seeing how well the 985 i might as well grow that one that is in the freezer too. this takes a lot of fun out of the winter plans, but oh well. still have plenty of time to decide on that but the 901, 985, 1147 sounds like a good line up to me.
