went out to takes some measurements for the first time in a while to be pleasantly surprised. they are still growing very slowly. this is nice knowing that i have been gaining and not losing over the last 10 days. i have watered the same amount as i did all season except for the brief rains in hopes to keep the plants gaining slowly til the end. and it is tough to over water when you have as many weeds as i do right now. but the plants are still producing pop up tertiaries which is a good sign and nice to see male and female flowers just for fun. i feel anything to keep the plants producing leaves, vines, flowers or anything this late helps the plant retain some energy and transfer a little more into the pumpkin. hard to explain why i feel this way, but in unscientific terms, i feel the plant still feels like it has some purpose left while making some more leaves and flowers. like a last chance at making one more seed carrier and therefor the balance of nutrients flowing in the plant is still in production mode. but who knows, just more rantings of a lunatic pumpkin grower. getting excited for the weigh off next weekend. sucks to hear that gene mcmullens big'n went down. heartbreaker. but a weight of 1544 lbs in milwaukee is still awesome. so i need to go 7.4% heavy still have a chance to top the official illinois record this year as "it" is 403" ott today and estimated at 1367 pounds on day 96. the "freak" has some minor stem issues that have been addressed all week but still growing too at 369" ott and estimated at 1052 pounds on day 89.
