here is another shot of the stem. still looks young and has some more growth to it left as it isn't showing signs of surface cracking or the woody feel older stems get. and the pumpkin isn't cantaloping too much yet, which hopefully means it still has plenty of time to slowly pack on pounds. you can see the weeds are also growing, but the trade off of not going into the patch and tromping your soil and disconnecting established root systems by pulling out entwined weed roots is worth it in my eyes. it is like economics 101. trade offs. i will trade the early established pumpkin root system and the pounds that come with it to the small amount of weight lost from competing weeds. a pretty patch is not my style anyway.
