Right in the middle of winter here but it’s 60 degrees in the greenhouse today and the rye is looking great. Two months and I will be starting seeds I can hardly wait. Breaking the 2000 pound barrier is the goal for this year.

Trying a new product this year hopefully adds some good to the soil and helps loosen it.

After going to the growers convention in Danvers and then the Michigan spring seminar with an amazing guest speaker Mike Schmidt I am ready to hit the patch but nope going to have to wait a while.

Ok so hope this photo is right and on another note I spelled Mikes name right but these phones think they are smarter than us Schmit lol

Spreading something dark in color to speed up the snow melt is how I start my season every year.

Friday, March 24 View Page
This is by far the earliest I’ve ever mowed the lawn lol. All joking aside it’s time to start knocking the rye cover crop down.

Started broad forking today and it appears once over with the tiller like I planned won’t be enough to break the root mass up but on the bright side this should help my soil in the end.

Meanwhile outside it’s still winter. Hopefully things will start to change in a couple weeks.

Sunday, April 2 View Page
Just under 19 inches of snow yesterday so nothing happening in the outside patch anytime soon but it’s nothing I’m not used to.

Meanwhile in the greenhouse just finished broadforking in preparation for tilling the rye under.

And first tilling of the year is done. Next step amendments and seeds get started next weekend.

Started seeds for the greenhouse today. My top choices are obviously the 1885 Werner and the 2365 wolf. The 2201 Wallace,1953 Daletas and my 1849 are backups if needed.

Picture doesn’t do it justice but nice mess of perch caught by my son, nephew and myself today through the ice. Still a good 2 feet of ice so maybe I can still get out the end of the week despite the mid 60s temps we have coming this week.

This will be the last day of ice fishing for the year and what a beautiful morning. I know there is no ice in the picture but we are taking a ferry to an island where the ice holds the longest.

Plants for the greenhouse have all been up potted and doing well. It’s always a relief when your top dollar seeds germinate.

Today is seed starting day for the outside patch. This year I will be growing the 1707.5 Caspers and my 1849. My wife Becky likes to grow orange and trying for a big one this year with the 2006 Wolf.

Sunday, April 30 View Page
Same with the outside patch but just the dairy doo and peat for now. Going to rain most of the week but hopefully I will be able to get the hoops up and ready to go next weekend.

2365 Wolf on the left 2201 Wallace to the right I guess it’s go time in the greenhouse!

Battle for the other spot in the greenhouse is the 1953 Daletas on the left and the 1885 Werner on the right. The 2365 and the 1885 are the favored plants but I have all the confidence in the world with the 1953 and the 2201 if something goes bad.
