After a couple years of being too busy to really tend to a pumpkin and pulling plants due to weather, this year I'm torn between which one to keep. Pollinated 12 days apart - first one was tickled with just one male, the second (next post) had 4. Second has a much better placement. Will wait and see.

The small one - 12 days younger.

After being away for a week, I knew I would have to make a decision on which pumpkin to keep. The small one just didn't grow as much as I would have liked, so the big one it is. It's not positioned well on the vine and I didn't prep vines with it in mind, but it will have to do. Tapes at 235 on day 35 and added about 24 pounds a day while I was away.

Still gaining but definitely not as high daily gains as before. The patch has been neglected due to another all encompassing hobby (dog shows and performance trials) but after two years of no pumpkin, I'm happy with this one so far. If it gains enough to flirt with the 1000 pound mark (measuring about 865 now), I may take it to a weigh off, if anything to get an official weight. Either way, we'll be donating it to our local winery's Pumpkin Fest for everyone to enjoy.

Walter hit 90 DAP today and still putting on a few pounds. Looking to ensure he doesn't develop any cracks over the next couple weeks before he gets picked.

At 96 DAP, old man Walter has pretty much stopped growing. He measures 361 but my gut is that he's not as heavy as he measures.

We decided to move Walter to his new temporary digs before a major fall storm arrives and before my non-hired help leaves for holidays. Walter will head to the weigh off in a couple weeks.

Walter traveled to the BC Giant Pumpkin weigh off and surprised me by hitting the scales at 1152 pounds - a personal best and big enough for first place (thanks to a couple other heavy hitters being elsewhere).
