This post is a thank you to Rodebaugh. Even more than the sunflower seeds I had requested he sent me a Mountain State Giant Grower’s patch which really means a lot to me as all of my family comes from the great state of West Virginia. Thanks again Chris

Started two 1884 Crews today. Figured out that my laundry room stays 85-86 degrees with the door closed. If both germinate they will go in my main patch and one will be culled.

This is my 1891 Harnica. I was very excited for this 23% heavy plant. One of the cots got stuck in the seed coat under the soil and the plant pulled away from it. I had to do some digging to get it out. Guess I will see how starts out as a one cot wonder!

1938 Urena, 2269 Haist, and 1884 Crews all looking good. The 2269 had a small cot and they are kinda funky but should be ok. I’m using pieces of wood under the pots so I can adjust the height of each one individually if needed. Other seeds that popped out of the dirt today are 2469 Daletas, 1625 Gantner, and the poor 1891 Harnica. All of these will be grown between myself, my dad and a friend.

Should be the last night I have to drag the tarp over the hoop. Tarp gives me an extra 5 degrees. So far been able to keep it in the 60’s when temps are right around freezing. 1884 Crews getting the extra attention right now with the light. Also tilled a little more of my cover crop in around the hoop with lots of rain in the forecast for the next few weeks. I could only hope to have growing out of the hoop be a problem.

Throwback Thursday. This is my grandfather Allen “Big Al” Kisamore and I with the 2416 Haist in 2018. Grandpa was the one who got me interested in giant pumpkins. He grew back in the mid 90’s the first few years the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers existed. He was super excited when I offered to take him to the weigh off and also when I said I was gonna try to grow one. Sadly he passed away last July at 88 years old. I guess you could also say this is my motivation photo. Trying to beat his personal best of 571 in 1995 or 1996 I can’t remember, I’d have to go look at all of the OVGPG newsletters he had saved from back in those days.

The new guardian of the patch Punkin aka Punk. Pictured here with my dad’s 1689 Platte which is 504 pounds on Dap 32. His first year growing and his goal was 500 pounds. Very pound of him. He’s gonna pass my pumpkins up. Guess I’m a better coach than a player.

Pulled the pumpkin on my 150 plant yesterday. Had stopped growing. Never did grow right after the incident with the round up early on. Pollinated another one on the only vine still growing. Will try to get a weight on it. For now 185 Est (1625xself)

Before we left for Barnesville. Dad in his first year growing took 8th place with his 1199 Kisamore 2020 (2469 Daletas x 1891 Harnica) 14% Heavy! And my pumpkin is now the 722 Kisamore 2020 (1891 Harnica x 1625 Gantner) 4% Heavy. Accomplished my number one goal for the year which was getting one to the scale. We both have another pumpkin to take to Canfield, hopefully we can make top 30 lol

2021 has begun. Bought a house on 10 acres. Plowed about 10,000 sqft. Plan is that it will be two patches and I will only amend and not grow on one for the first three years.
