First season, trying an untested heirloom beefsteak in Australia. I’m starting to get some decent blooms. Will be pruning hard and keeping to a single leader. This grow I’ll probably try the MacCoy approach and keep plant very short.

Have one of my plants with a very nice flower. It’s on first truss so probably not ideal but I am keen too see what it grows into. It’s fused and a good size.

Flower looks good. I love the look of the big blooms. Hopefully we get some reasonable pollination.

Flower 3 all three flowers are in different heirloom beefsteak plants. This is an untested cultivar but my first season. My learning season.

The “best” or maybe better to call it my most fused blossom. However it has some brown dying spots so I think it may not make it.

Carrot grow. Going for heavy. 40cm split pipe home made pot system. And then transfer into 15 to 20L buckets once roots make it to the bottom. I plant per pot two commercial cvs of carrots. Both grown in my region.

A few concerns about dark spots on this one.

Short and bushy still growing thicker all the time I still haven’t tied this one. Once I get tow or so set I’ll start to terminate the growth points. Then reduce down to one fruit per bush once we are over the first 15 days of fruit set.

This one had a large leaf snapped off accidentally but has set a nice fruit in a good spot so even tho it’s not as leafy I have high hopes for this one.

Got some new seeds. Oldies but goodies. Thanks to another Ozzie grower.

June 12. Three ugly fruit starting to grow. I had thought that the first mega bloom had failed but it appears to be putting on size, I imagine it’s not going to go big due to poor pollination but I’m going to let it go and see. The other two are starting to pump. One looks to be turning inside out. Maybe too much water? Time will tell.

Too cultivars to try this year. Topweight and all season. I’ve chosen these as they are grown commercially here and with out humid climate I’m looking for tried and Tru first. Years ago I tried flakkie and they struggled in the conditions here.

Winter corn grow. Very keen to see how these Australian heirloom maize seeds go. Manning white with grow a dongle large cob and grow 3.5m in height on average under commercial under conditions. It’s winter so not aiming for any records but I am aiming for some good sized cobs and plenty of seed stock. The bed is big enough to fit about 6 to 8 plants in a block planting. Should give me some good seed. And a bit of fun. I’ll be feeding a more balanced fert regime as I’d like to start my summer grow with nice big seeds.

Creeping up to 19 to 20 days growing steady but not incredibly. Plant looks healthy and is big enough I think. Plant 3 could hold together to give me something. It has some cat facing at the base but growing nice and solid.

Plant 2. Ugly duckling has nearly turned itself inside out, not sure how it will go. It’s growing but I don’t feel like it will make another 20 days. Plant is smaller and leggy compared to plant 3. Approx 19 to 20 days set.

Corn germinated yesterday so that’s about 4 days which is lightning fast

The corn seedlings have been moved into position in the grow area in a mini “greenhouse” and have been put on a heat mat still. I’ll let these plants establish and grow a decent root zone before I put them in the ground. The goal this winter is to grow some nice full ears with big seeds for our serious summer grow which will I’m aiming for sowing around the 10th of October.

First night in the box and they are away. I am liking the vigorous start in the Manning white.

Have a outdoors spot light hooked up over the corn seedlings hopefully to trick them into a longer day period maize grows more nodes in longer days.

Plant 3 starting to fatten up. I have to put a harness and sling on this one.

Plant 3 needs to be supported now. I’ll get this done in the morning.

Approx day 38. These heirloom beefsteaks didn’t do it. But are slowly adding weight everyday. I’m hoping they will keep on quietly ticking for another 20 days in which case I’ll have a bench mark PB that I will be happy with. Some where between 2 and 3lbs. This is a winter grow so next set of seeds have germinated and I think with my new leaned knowledge I’ll do better.
