I keep meaning to update this but I'm terrible at posting here and checking out BP.com (although I do get notifications on my phone for new posts on the message boards) Anyways, I am growing again in a stupid small area which I have dubbed The Tiny Patch here in NZ. So far, things are looking OK, I'm growing a 1916 Haist, I'm at 17 DAP, and am hoping to get a good sized pumpkin, relative to the size of the patch etc. If you get bored waiting for your season to start, come check out what I'm up to in these handy locations: https://www.giantpumpkins.co.nz/blog/ https://www.instagram.com/giantpumpkinsnz/ https://www.youtube.com/user/giantpumpkinsNZ

Today in the Tiny Patch I set up some shade protection from the sun and had to deal with some powdery mildew issues. It's one of those days I wish I was growing in a proper sized patch. All the info and more photos can be found over on my site: https://www.giantpumpkins.co.nz/protecting-the-pumpkin-from-the-sun/

I thought the blossom end was getting way too sot and thought there was going to be problems with it, so I got some things I needed to sort that out and it seems all good now. More info and video of this weeks stuff right here: https://www.giantpumpkins.co.nz/dealing-with-a-potential-soft-blossom-end/

This week I shot out to Tim's patch to see what is going on out there. If you didn't know he is the current New Zealand record holder. His largest pumpkin ended up with a blossom end split, luckily he has another pumpkin that's looking good. For a bunch of photos and some video with Tim check out my latest blog entry here: https://www.giantpumpkins.co.nz/timspumpkinsplit/

I forget to post here all the time :( The growing season for us Southern Hemisphere growers is in full swing. I’m growing in what I like to call the Tiny Pumpkin Patch again this year. It has about 20 square feet of actual soil, the rest is paving stones covered with moss and grass. Last year I was able to grow a 202lb (92kg) pumpkin in this crazy small space. I update my websites blog each week with what I’ve been up to www.giantpumpkins.co.nz/blog/ at the bottom you can sign up to get a weekly or monthly digest of blog updates emailed directly to you if you want to keep up with what’s happening. Around this time of the year here, it is time for pollination. I’m growing the Harris 1891 (a few people are) this is the heaviest pumpkin grown in NZ, but it split before getting to our weigh off. I’m waiting for a better placed female flower on the main vine. It will be self pollinated. Growing through Christmas and New Years and catching up with family and friends can make things a little difficult. But it’s all about planning and making sure you are around during key milestones.
