Question was asked about pumpkin roots on one of the discussion threads. Here's a photo of roots coming off nodes PRIOR to fruit set. Vertical height is 24". Roots at stump generally account for 50% of root mass by end of season. One of the benefits of growing aeroponically- I get to see the roots daily.

Since I managed to post the photo sideways, VERTICAL distance is 24"

2018 red cabbage at 94 days. It finished at 21.8 lbs. In a state famous for giant cabbages, it was like sitting at the kids table because you wren't big enough to sit with the adults of the cabbage world

2019 red at 87 days. Sitting at 44" across vs last years 23"@ 94 days and still a week to go for even comparison. If I can keep this girl and her sister healthy, they may finally let me in the same room with the REAL cabbage growers. This heat wave currently isn't helping though.

My first try at a plate Dahlia last year. Timing was way off. Had this 15-1/2" flower on 7/1, almost 2 months too soon for the State Fair. Had another at 15" open less than 2 weeks after the fair. Have 3 plants with staggered start times this year, and so far they are far, far healthier than last years attempts. It will still take alot of luck for the timing to be correct with only 3 flowers.

Red cabbage at 100 days starting to head up

Cabbages have a relatively small root mass. This would normally spread laterally except for the taproot, but with no soil to act as a support structure, gravity takes over

Large healthy leaf growth on a chrysanthemum. No signs of stress. Healthy plant, right? WRONG

Same plant 1 foot up. This plant suffered major root death 10 weeks ago due to equipment failure. You can see older leaves stressed and new growth starting to recover. Previous photo is all new growth. This plant is just over 10' tall at 14 months old, where it overwintered in the garage. It would have topped the current WR in June if not for the "incident". Grew 6' in 6 months inside. It's grown 1-1/2" in last 10 weeks. Probably another 8-10 weeks for the entire plant to recover. I'll have to figure out how to find space in the garage again this winter for a shot at the record next season.

Had a pump fail on DAP10 and lost most of the roots that afternoon. What surprised me was the last spurt of growth following the root death. Very little growth on the stem end and massive growth on the blossom end. Growth on the following day was minimal so gourd was terminated

I often have to leave my plants unattended for 4-7 days at a time while I head to remote gold mines. If I have to be away, there are worse places to be. This is the view out the job trailer

Talk about mega blossoms- This entry at the Alaska State Fair by a local gardener just won the "Oddities" Category. Just talked to the grower and got the Variety name.

This is his second year growing this variety. Both years 2 of 9 plants produced huge megablossoms. This group of three tomatoes has an estimated 40+ fused flowers. He'll have seeds from another branch on this same plant available later. I'll post more info on the tomato thread.
