In fact it is rare to find someone not running a pumpkin farm who even attempts to grow a giant. But, I have been trying to work up to them for a few years. In 2015 I grew three polar bear pumpkins tipping just over a hundred pounds each, and one Atlantic giant around 150. Then I had a couple bad years with super late freezes, bug attacks, and temps so high that no fruit would set. This will be the first year I am confident enough to try naming my pumpkin. I got a handful of seeds from a 500 pounder on display at a pumpkin patch that was trucked in from the patch in California. I am a major fan of the long running show Doctor Who, and I feel that anything good that I have produced has generally had a good female name. And as such, I am officially naming my pumkin...Madam Vastra, after the Silurian warrior credited with the apprehension and ingestion of Jack the Ripper. In the interest of having a strong pumpkin,i want to give her a strong name. Nevada is always hot. I have been relying on sunflowers for shade and such. I have a really small backyard patch, about 20’x7’. I didn’t really get to follow all the rules of distances from stump and lengths of secondary vines, but I have been working this baby hard. I really am a noob, unless you count many hours on YouTube and a few past years of smaller successes. Any input on what to do to push growth for the last 30-45 days?
