WOW! The 2145.5 McMullen in the SNGPG auction. Somebody is sleeping on the couch.

Heavy carrots started. Do I know what I'm doing? No. Do I think I will grow the biggest carrot I have ever grown? Yes.

Big onions started. Same type but from different companies. The climate in Oregon seems to grow onions really well.

Here we go. The start of the season couldn't start without 10yrs of grown-n-gold which is infested with all that mycorrhizal goodness!

Ready to transplant one carrot. Some of the amendments I will add to the soil.

Thursday, March 22 View Page
Ten carrots narrowed down to this one in a 12" pot. The roots are sticking out the bottom.

Thursday, March 22 View Page
In a 100 gallon Rubbermaid water trough I put the WOW starter packs in 6 layers of my soil mix starting at the bottom all the way to the top. In theory the root will grow in the middle. At the top I will plant the carrot in a 20 gallon air pot with the bottom cut out for more height.

Cut the bottom out of pot and slid it out for the perfect transplant. All 30 WOW starter packs used for this guy.

And here we have it. The most pampered carrot in the west. Set on the west side of the house for that morning to noon sun...smack dab in the middle of my wife's favorite flower bed planting spot! She will be so excited when she gets home in a few days to see this! I am so in trouble.

...set on the east side of the house, not west. Now on to getting my onions in the ground tomorrow and starting big bells peppers.

Saturday, March 24 View Page
It's that time of year to get onions in the ground. I'm confident in onion growing as I have been successful year after year. This is the first year I have started heavy onions from seed or have attempted heavy onions for that matter. Did both. Ordered the Alisa Craig variety from a couple of sources. These are from Johnny's Selected Seeds and were the largest so went with those. I sort through the bunches and only plant the largest ones. I find that small starts grow small onions and the largest grow the largest. Kind of makes sense. I picked 33 to put into the ground.

Saturday, March 24 View Page
I also received onion bunches from Jung's. They were tiny so didn't use them, only their fertilizer at planting. Needless to say I have many many left over onion starts I will stash around the garden for the purpose of eating.

Saturday, March 24 View Page
Now these are Walla Walla onions. Not for heavy's, just for eating. During the Summer I purposely leave a few of the smaller Walla Walla's in the garden just for the purpose of division. The old onion rots during the Fall and Winter then divides into 5-10 separate one's. I separate them and only plant the largest. These are my favorite for eating.

Some people are unsuccessful at planting onions because of a couple of basic reasons. In my area (Oregon) I like to get them started early. Before April. It is too early for tilling because the soil is wet, so I use the broadfork to loosen the soil, and at the same time adding new stuff. My soil is pretty loose anyway because I have been making and adding to it for 25 years. Perlite, coir, ect. The other reason is that growers will plant the bulb too deep. They will just rot and die. That bulb needs to be just under the surface. I dig a deep hole and add some fertilizer. Then backfill with a little soil and carefully lift the onion so the roots stay deep and straighten out. Takes a little practice but you will not lose very many to rot. Oh, and sprinkle slug bate around the perimeter. Once they discover your onions they will mow them down.

Saturday, March 24 View Page
I stand on a piece of plywood as I move down the row so I don't compact the soil.

Saturday, March 24 View Page
My onion bed. Forty-five Alisa Craig heavy onions and 15 Walla Walla's. All done in the wind, cold and rain. Got tired of looking out of the window waiting for a nice day. Once you get all muddy and wet, working in the dirt, you will have turned a corner to leave winter behind.

Yes!! The Yeti Rambler Colster!! A koozie on steroids! Plus a 12 oz can of fresh N.Y. air. This isn't for kids. This will hold my beverage of choice, cold, for a long time while working in the 90F heat...will keep me in the garden longer... which will ensure that I will grow an 8 lb tomato this year! A great teammate although not on my team. Thanks Porkchop!

Heavy carrot at 55 days. Looks like a big carrot cake. I guess it's doing well.

Friday, April 6 View Page
Carrot at 55 days. I don't know, 1/2"? 3/4"? Like seeing new leaves grow out of it. I wish there was such a thing as see through soil. It's going to take everything I have to not dig down and see how big it is through out the season.

This guy has been watching me work the soil all day, so I decided to take his photo. Could of reached out and picked him up. It's been nice and sunny, 60F. This is ahead of a storm we have showing up tomorrow.

Mixing and turning my secret weapon. About a yard of household composted garbage. It's been about 2.5 yrs since I started this batch. Coffee ground, TP rolls, onions, paper towels, banana peels, it's all in there. My son said he put his dead hamster in there I but couldn't find it. And the worms! Still has a couple of months to go. I'll put a shovel full in the hole of each of my plants.

Here is another of the 4.52 "toe"mato last year along with another from the 1.68 seed. That seed sure made a lot of tomato bling!

So I get the text at work that everyone wouldn't like: "Hey, I'm bringing something home..." and left it at that. I'm thinking a pizza. It was an Australian Shepherd. It's playing around me while I'm trying to get my tomato seeds going. Hope I can keep track of the seeds.

Happy naked gardening day! The selfie was just way too close for this site so you'll just have to take my word for it. Tomato's after 9 days. Most everything up with few disappointments. Except 1/4 7.07 Qualley's up. Another is trying. All the Foss/Spaziani/LaRue/Treece genetics up minus a couple. All MegaMutts and ZacHearts up. Both 5.95 Konieczny Domingo's up (lower left 2 and 3 up from the corner... Except its offspring the 8.22 Marley Domingo is nearly a no show, lower left 1/5, right next to its parent the 5.95 Konieczny. So I'm figuring if you can get these up it will be a special seed and plant. I dug down a little and see a couple more trying to emerge. At least I got one. The rest are sleepy, but I have hope!

Tomato transplant day. Will transplant 40 then narrow it down to 30 for the garden. One little lowly 8.22 Porkchop Domingo remains. Two more came up but a slug got them! I have hope for this little guy. You wait, it will grow a monster.

Super excited to try these! Two packs of WOW extended release starter paks for season long WOW influence! One lucky tomato will get these and one lucky giant bell pepper.

Saturday, May 26 View Page
WOW season long starter pak experiment and contest. The other paks available are for short term feeding. These are for season long feeding. Not available yet. I will plant 4 identical San Marzano tomato plants started by seed. I will put two paks (it is really spelled pak not pack) in the second one from the right. No other fertilizer will be used. I just added fresh garden mix/compost to add something to the soil. Put on the side of my house out of the garden. Soil is not the best there so will be a good experiment. The only other thing added was WOW mycorrhizal inoculant to each planting hole. Every plant will be treated the same all summer.

WOW season long paks and inoculant.

Four San Marzano tomato plants. The second from the right will receive the WOW treatment and nothing else!

Here they are, in the ground. The second from the right was the only one receiving the goods. My bad ass broad fork and humble Porkchop provided Koozy are watching over making sure I do things right.

June 1st is transplant to garden day! Can't wait! They all look good. The largest are the MegaMutt ZZZ's, 7.10 Foss's, and 5.95 Konieczny's. The cutest little guy is the 8.22 Porkchop right of middle...Slow start big finish!

Thursday, May 31 View Page
I guess I missed a seed last year. Now its growing out of my little compost bin. If I can accidentally germinate one anybody can! There are more on the other side. I will try to save one of them and grow it as a mystery plant. I will use the two year compost today and tomorrow to put into each tomato planting hole.

Cool!! This is a good sign. From time to time I find little chips or worked rocks when I turn the soil. This is the first whole arrowhead I found in the garden. I have found a few arrowheads before in the field and even a whole foot long pestle a couple years back. Mostly I find very sharp knife like scrapers. There was a lot of activity here before I was born!

Only 25 giant tomatoes, not 30 as planned. I increased the distance to 3' all the way around this year so when it was all said and done I ran out of room. Those white things are paper "hot caps" that protect little plants from hot sun and cold nights. Thought I'd give them a try. Each plant has 3 leaves. Missing the cut was the MegaMutt D and Z (sad face) and several of my 6.02's and a LaRue 7.19 and misc. other one's. Anyone in the mid Oregon are want them? I also have a "Konieczny-Porkchop-Qualley row". Should provide some good entertainment. Porkchop, you are representing your 8.22. I still have hope for that little thing. It put on a couple of leaves. Chris, your two 5.95's are massive, and Q, your 7.07's are going to make a great salad, but hopeful they grow something larger than your 7.07.

This little guy follows me everywhere I go. If I put it down, he picks it up...and chews on it. Got him chew toys, bones, ect. Doesn't matter. Only likes to pick up and run off with my stuff. It took me 20 minutes to find Porkchops Yeti koozie. He did save a little beer in it for me that little puppy drunkard. Gets it from moms side.

Really really sold on these "hotkaps". Made from paper. If you don't have a greenhouse these are the bomb! My plants easily doubled in size in the week since I planted them. Protected them from cool nights and hot sun days after transplant. Now the plants have outgrown them and they are on their own. I will put the plants in the garden even smaller next year (copy Wixom).

Really pleased with the giant onions this year. The largest were started by seed. The one's ordered that were already started are not as big but nice none the less.

Most of my 25 tomatoes were really damaged. The top main stem growth along with most of the first flowers were damaged to where I had to finish taking them off. They were dangling by a thread. I didn't pick off the first or second suckers on all of them.

Friday, June 22 View Page
Some survivors were the 7.10 Foss. The hail just bounced off it, it's that tough. The Domingos were good and all have first flowers forming.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
Tomatoes moving along now. They really responded to the plastic I put in last week. Lets in light but not light that grows weeds. Soil is warmer a few inches down even after the sun goes down. Trying to imitate your mid 60's night time temps you back east people have. Either way, no ribbon vines or large megablooms. Just the general blooms. Really weird. Not like last year. Looks like I'll be all about the end of the summer big'uns.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
Again, really happy with the onions this year. All softball size and larger. They keep going and going. Still all green stalks. By this time last year they all was brown.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
Carrot Cake! Surrounded by marigolds. The plan was to grow them out so the hot summer sun wouldn't cook the sides of the air pot. Seems to be working. They say when it starts to flower..it's done, but it is easily still growing. I have been just pinching off the flower buds. The flower stalk still makes leaves. I am growing out a few flowers for seeds 'cause when I break Q's record we need seeds right?

Saturday, July 7 View Page
WOW! This thing is hitting on all cylinders! Growing down the center through 30 WOW starter paks. Hard to measure the crown but it is 9-10" across. With three months to go it hasn't shown any sign of letting up. Haven't dug down to see any part of the carrot yet. There is a mat of roots. Will throw a party when carrot cake is pulled. With all the people watching...it better be more than 3" long.

Today I attempted a great tomato cross for next year. Female is a 7.10 Foss BZ. Males are 8.22 Marley (Porkchop) Domingo. Here before the Foss flower opened I pulled off the male parts (Anther cones) so it wouldn't self pollinate. I used tweezers. This exposed the female (stamen). A very close up operation so I had to put on my glasses.

Thursday, July 19 View Page
...Here some unsuspecting 8.22 Marley flowers, fully loaded with pollen, are hanging out. I used these two today and will use a couple more younger one's tomorrow. I do not know the exact time the Foss female is ready so I will pollinate over the course of a couple of days.

Thursday, July 19 View Page
I used tweezers and pulled one Marely anther cone at a time, dabbing it on the female Foss stigma. I also dabbed the petals on there encase some pollen fell on them. This is assuming the male and female are ready. If it doesn't take I will try again down the line. This is a cool cross if it works. You can't go wrong with both genetics. What would I name it? Zac-ingo? Big Marley?

What's this!! Something from the squash family in my garden? It's a 210.5 English '15 Bushel Gourd. Started slow but now taking off with the warmer weather. I did not research how to grow these. Just treating it with the same Rebel love I do with all my plants.

Thursday, July 19 View Page
...and I have a baby Bushel Gourd at about 2 dap. Wasn't there 5 days ago. Off the main on a secondary. On my 8' main this is only the 2nd female I have seen on the whole plant. The other on the main was deformed. Many many male flowers.

All my 5 Zac Heart plants are doing well and really taking off. All have nice flowers, 3 fused, with multiple takes on most of them. This one is plant #3 at 5 dap. There is another big bloom in the background on a big sucker branch. It's hard to commit to topping the plant when big flowers keep coming out.

Thursday, July 19 View Page
This is from the Zac Heart #2 plant at 11". It has grown .85" per day the last 5 days. Really like the shape. It is a 3 fused if you were to look at it from the bottom side. Really like the stretch marks on the stem.

Trying the large peppers. This is a Colossal Hybrid, the same variety as the world record 695g (1 lb 8.51 oz) Nieuwenoff. I have a few of those going also. Had pulled off some earlier takes and now they are in the flowering stage.

Wednesday, July 25 View Page
The third on the same 7.19 LaRue plant. A 6 or 7 pounder will come from this plant! All the flowers on this plant were from the first and second suckers coming out lower down on the plant. The top main stem was blasted apart by hail some time back. This is why I leave the first and second suckers on. They grow as big as the main.

Wednesday, July 25 View Page

WOW season long starter pak test. Yes, it's spelled "pak". Mmmm..which one has the goods? Nothing additional added to each of these 4 San Marzano tomato plants. No trimming. Only some bug spray. ..And Chris, I have a couple trying on your 5.95's. Two plants also. This one seems to be trying. It's flowers seem much different than the BZ.

Wednesday, August 8 View Page
...and another flower. Hopefully it takes. Brutal 95F-100F heat is not ideal for pollination's but the Wixom tomato is super special and will resist the power of the sun.

...and Porkchipp, a couple going on your 8.22 Domingo. You see the many stigma's on that flower? I am thinking that each represents a single tomato. The boy parts seems shriveled up in heat. It just takes one! Have them covered.

...and this is what the 8.22 Porkchop turns into on my plant. Just a week old. It's growing different than yours Porkchop. I gave the little runt plant little hope at the beginning. This 5.95 Konieczny Domingo line is a great plant!

Wednesday, August 8 View Page
Another one I am keeping my eye on is this 6.06 Spaziani from the 7.10 Foss at 9 dap. In a couple of days it will be a complete circle. This is the only plant in the garden that has the WOW season long starter paks. And yes, it's spelled paks. Maybe Ron misspelled it but not me.

This is the 7.10 Foss x 8.22 Marley Domingo at 19 dap. Growing nicely. Growing just for the seeds. I will do another competition next year with the seeds from this one. Wixom, you can grow this one since it has Domingo in it and you are the grandfather.

...and THIS is the other on the 7.19 LaRue. I was toothbrushing it 5 days ago! As planned, I wanted to pollinate most everything around the first of August. By then there is a larger plant and bigger roots by the time of pollination. No first trusses on the main except the ZacHeart #2. Everything else has been waist to nipple high and from the first suckers. There is no exact science to this hobby. Keep trying my friends. What you do one year may be different the next year.

This is from my 26th tomato plant in the garden. I'll call its the "orphan plant". On 5-31 in my diary I posted some tomato seedlings growing out of the vent of my little compost bin. Thought I would experiment and put it in the garden. It could of been a cherry tomato, from a 6.23 MegaZac, or many of the throw away tomato's from last year. It's kind of fun! There are two super big megablooms on this plant starting to emerge for pollination in two weeks. The brown spots are from a combo of kelp and Calcium Chloride. Each plant has tomato's growing and covered, all around the same age. I picked a 8.22 Porkchop that had BER but another has formed on top (nipple height) so it should be good to go.

We are having the heat wave of the ages here out west. Where I live it's low to upper 90's through the end of August. Not a drop of rain all summer.

I had buried this WOW starter pak underneath the plant when I planted it. The mole didn't like the taste and carried it out about 2 feet away.

The giant carrot keeps chugging along. It's an old grow now!

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
The giant cucumbers have been a blast this year. Picked a smaller one today that was 6 lbs. This one is still growing at 25"+.

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
Picked a bell pepper today from the Colossal variety. It was 0.71 lbs. Have been keeping the deer at bay this year with my "scarecrow" motion detection sprayer. I keep forgetting to turn it off when I go into the garden. Startles the hell out of me sometimes.

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
I have several bell peppers going from the world record 695g (l lb 8.51 oz). If I skip a few days of inspection these things cram themselves in the center of the plant. I have been breaking off smaller or misshaped ones.

7.10 Foss. Several tomato's I have going will challenge my pb of 6.06. Don't know this one's dap but it's around 20-25.

My first tomato of the year! Officially weighed as a 3.05 Zacheart. Just for the Zacheart competition but I don't count! I made a more promising cross for next year....

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
This is my new cross for next season. The 7.10 Foss BZ x 8.22 Marley (Domingo) at 34 dap. Just a big single (20") for seeds. It will be called "Big Marley" because I couldn't find a Big Zac and Domingo combo of names that sounded good. Zingo? No. Big Marley. If you can't grow a Big Zac but can grow a Domingo (you know who you are) this seed is for you! There will be another comp for this cross. We should have a "cross-off" next year Chris W! Your cross against my cross.

A new Zacheart world record? From the Zacheart #5 plant and only half way done!

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
From the 7.19 LaRue. Around 20" and 25 dap. This one had Cytokinin spray prior to pollination.

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
From the 6.23 Megazac, otherwise know as the orphan plant that I dug out of my compost pile. I really don't know what seed this came from but I know I threw away several smaller 6.23 Megazac offspring last year. No other plant I have ever grown grows like the 6.23 so it is recognizable.

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
...the brown spots on my tomatoes by the way, are from Dunkels and kelp foliar spray. This is one of two megablooms on the "6.23 Megazac". No other flower grows like this, does it Chris? A Megazac? Grows like candle on top of the stem. It is as wide going the other way. It'll grow a biggy for fall weigh-offs!

Wednesday, August 22 View Page
What do we have here? Finally something going on the 8.22 Marley (that's Porkchop's legal name). The male pollinator for my cross was made from this plant. Now I can grow a flower. Can I grow a Domingo.

Here is the other side of the 8.22 megabloom. We have dry, perfect temps coming up for pollination. I wanna grow one like PC !

Blossom end rot on the 8.22 Domingo. I have had a hard time with BER on the Domingo's this year. Happens right after I water. I sprayed with Calcium Chloride and Dunkels. Right after this I put sulfur on it. Usually it stops right there if I catch it in time. Another day or two it's too late and it takes over.

Wednesday, August 29 View Page
First year really focusing on giant sweet peppes. I have two of the world record plants going along with its variety, the Colossal. This one is on one of the Colossal's. I have been pruning new growth and new small peppers like a tomato plant to see if it does anything. Would like to get over a pound.

I tell ya, there is something to be said about the 5.95 Konieczny Domingo. I may not have any record breakers out of this seed this year but I can see how a world record can come from these. NOW it puts out big flowers but not enough time left. My two plants are putting them out all over from secondaries. If anybody can figure out how to get them out earlier, let me know. I hope to grow a few of these out for some seeds.

A great looking tomato on the 8.22 Marley Domingo. Not for size necessarily but a good example of how it has recovered from blossom end rot. All my Domingo's get this early. Only the Domingo's. Some Sulfur and Calcium usually cures it right up.

This larger one lighter green than the other one. Either way beautiful fruit! Started to measure today but my tomato tape only goes to 60" so I need to find another! Bell pepper from the world record seed (1.04 lbs or 471.74g). Pretty happy with the peppers this year. Next year I will use cages as the plants are falling down. The majority of the peppers are nearly or just over 1 pound. Sure good to eat anyway.

Wednesday, September 19 View Page
And the heaviest one! This one is 1.08 lbs or 489.88g from the world record seed (1.53 lb or 695g Nieuwenhoff). The 1.08 was a 3 lober if you are counting lobes. The other one's over 1 pound were 4 and 5 lobes, so it doesn't seem to make a difference. So this year the top three in my garden are: 1.04, 1.05, 1.08.

It seems like this one from the 5.13 LaRue has been growing since June! It is still growing slowly in the cold. My tomatoes still grow in the cold days and nights but not as fast of course. I gave this cross some thought from the beginning of the year. Prizes for places 1-3 will be sent out Monday or Tuesday. Remaining places and seeds will be sent out later when I send out normal seeds. Thank you again! And remember, it is about the spirit of the competition!
