My new invention, a metal candle holder upside down over the glass candle votive....It dissipates the heat so I can safely put frost cloth over the candle and plant. I put a wire hoop over the assembly to suspend the cloth over it. As I remind everyone every year, no electricity for heaters or cables at the community garden

Grown men playing with plants....here I was grafting Beaufort rootstock to Suddeth branywine scions (tops)...my first try at this...I was hopeful for 2-3 of 15 would survive....am pleased to say after 6 days in the incubator I may have 12 survivors....I see brandy wine tomato sauce in my future lol.

All you guys are living it up at the convention and I’m creeping around, in the dark, at the community garden. I realized I had forgot to cover / close one of my tunnels....it was 38f at 930pm...dodged a bullet...coyotes howling at me in the field 300ft away...who’s the craziest grower in the US right now?

One of three tunnels closed for the night with frost cloth/ candles for each plant. Unfortunately we’ve been mid 30’s last few nights, 55-62f days.

Been cold for two weeks at night in the garden, so when the first Holland bloom finally opened last Thursday, I selfed it despite its unevenness. We only have two months until 100f. So 9ft out it is

4 DAP on Holland, stem looks nice and long, looks viable so far. 80f today, drenched all three plants, no female on Young yet. Picture of DeBacco is most aggressive grower of the three, small female starting, lots of side vines, bit of frost burn on a few leaves. All plastic removed from three plants on Saturday.

2363 Holland 6 DAP...looks great, but I only have 60 days. Small hoop houses and cold weather were a bad combo this year.

Worked all Saturday burying vines...thought I’d post this to heighten everyone’s spring fever.

618 Young, smallest of the three, pollinated 4 lobe in tip and 5 lobe on oldest secondary yesterday, Plant looks like the Star Trek insignia, lol

Holland plant, slow in the side vines, we have had 2 separate weeks where the nite temps dipped into the 40’s, delaying growth in everything. This has a set about 2 weeks old and just pollinated another on the main yesterday.

Time for Smith Farm Saturday morning coffee, cup for me sitting on tailgate, gallons of a different “brew” into the watering cans for the plants. Even gave some to my brandywine grafts, they are about 15” tall and looking great!
