Hello all! I stopped by the Normandy Park Pumpkin Patch this afternoon to see how it held up this winter. Then off to city hall to discuss plans for this summer. We reached an agreement grow pumpkins this year. More Atlantic Giants this year the asked. This year I'll have eight plants this year. I tried Big Max for a mid-sized pumpkin and they didn't do too well. Atlantic Giants and Howden are what we'll be growing this season. If any of you have a few extra AG seeds you would like to have tried out. Please send me a note. Thanks! Robert

Spent the morning fixing the tiller and finishing up a brisket that had been smoking all night. Finally had a go at the pumpkin patch. This picture is a first pass with the tiller. the far end was seeded with grass and had been undisturbed for two years. Good soil, I'll put two or three AG's down there.

What the patch looked like earlier today. I'm not seeing the deep green in the plants as I have in prior years. I'm using Growco this year. The last couple of years has been straight up composted manure. I'll have to find a way to supercharge this soil...

Trouble in the pumpkin patch. Is this the notorious flat vine? I have two plants that are doing this. Will they produce? Is there a remedy?

Normandy Park pumpkin patch.... I've resorted to overhead watering except for the AGs. They continue to get flooded twice a week. Three to five days until pollination occurs...

And then, these AG's want to grow too fast...... Here is a blow out. Yesterday the stem split. This morning the AG cracked out. Disappointing... Suggestions as to how to keep this from happening. I have other AG's where the stem is splitting...

Thanks to all the great help at the Central Market today. I showed up too late to enter the weigh off. They were nice enough to give it a chance on the scale. 692 lbs! Thanks to the Ulhmeyer's for the great seeds. I'll be back up to the patch next week with the tiller and sowing a cover crop.

Tilled the Normandy Park Pumpkin Patch this evening and planted a pea/clover cover crop. We'll see if that takes. Hoping for a few more warm days before the rains descend.
