One of my requirments is boron. If anyone knows, please let me know how fast this particular granule will leach. I need to know if I should hold off or put it down now.

100% germination on my giant pumpkins. All were planted in the hoops this morning. The best looking plant so far is the 2008 Neptune.

Plant growth has been rather slow the past 3 weeks. 2008.5 Neptune looking a tad yellow. Im sure it will perk up next week with warmer temps coming.

I have an issue with each of my 2020.5 Werners. This pic is showing a kink in the main which is about a foot out from the stump. The plant is growing very well. In the next pic, you will see the other 2020 has a split on the main about 8 inches up from stump.

2020.5 Werner with vine split. Also growing good , but one day s getting cut out in a day or two.

Thursday, June 2 View Page
That was the wrong pic to pics ago. That was t,he one with the split, this pic is the one with the kink. I am leaning on keeping the one that has better looking side vines, but I would like to here from anyone who has either problem in the past anod let me know your outcome please. Thanks

Finally got the right picture up. This is the 2020.5 Werner with the kinked main. Like I said, it seems to be doing fine, but am looking to here if you have had this in the past and how the plant made out. I would think that as the plant grows , the vine may push some of the kink out possibly ?

Major cold front pushing in today, high winds up to 30 mph. Put up extra wind breaks and bambo supports. Night temps dipping into upper 40's next two nights.

Major rainfall yesterday evening. Fortunately the winds were not bad at all.

And again my driveway gets washed out. Spent this morning pulling gravel back on it.

Friday, June 17 View Page
Plants look good despite mud on all of the vine tips which i sprayed off. Up front is the 2020.5 Werner. In back is the 1797 Checkon, which is my best plant.

Friday, June 17 View Page
Up front is the 2008 Neptune. The main vine is gone, have to use a secondary for the main. Dont expect too much now , but hope to make a decent genetic cross. Plant in the back is the 1582.5 Werner, which is looking great . 3rd year I grew this seed, it always impresses me.

Friday, June 17 View Page
Major erosion last night. Have some roots showing. Gonna be a few days until this mess dries out enough to burry vines.

Pollinated 1582.5 Werner ( 4 lobe ) x 2008 Neptune. Pollinated 2020.5 Werner ( nice 5 lobe ) x 1797 Checkon. Nice cool morning. Used two flowers on each at 6:45 am then two or three more flowers at 8:45 am.

Patch overview. Plants are looking good, and loving the warm temps. Very little pressure from bugs so far. I have seen a few cuke beetles, but mostly dead ones on a few leaves. I am still waiting to pollinate on the 2008 Neptune. I lost some time retraining a side to be the main. Should have one ready in a day or two.

Friday, June 24 View Page
For any growers that have never seen one, this is your classic double vine / ribbon vine. It will give you everything double, and close together. This one is on the first secondary on my 2008 Neptune plant. I have been pruning anything and everything to make it look like a normal vine.

Friday, June 24 View Page
I believe there are two in this pic that got pollinated. This is the 1797 Checkon plant. Pollinated one this morning x the 2020.5 Werner, around 13-14 ft out. I will prolly keep this one if it sticks. Cross : 1797 Checkon x 2020.5 Werner

Friday, June 24 View Page
This one was pollinated on the 22nd on the 2020.5 Werner plant. 1st one on the main. Cross is 2020.5 Werner x 1797 Checkon.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
This morning, the 25th. 1582.5 x 1797 Checkon, 4 lobe at around 13 ft on main. It would s #3 on the main. #1 is getting cut off in a few days, too close to stump.

This morning, 2008 Neptune x 2020.5 Werner. Lobes were so deformed i could not get pollen in the center. On top of that, it had seeds in the blossem. Got to wait for the next one now, several days out. This plant suffered some leaf burn with the recent hot , dry weather over the weekend.

Thursday, June 30 View Page
Yesterday 6-29-16 open pol on 2020.5( used pollen from 1797, but still open) # 2 on main Today 6-30-16, pollinated 2020.5 x 1797 Checkon on main # 3

Friday, July 1 View Page
2008 Neptune x 1797 Checkon pollinated this am. #2 on main and again, it has deformed lobes. This time , i was able to get pollen in the center with a tiny paint brush. Inhope this one takes.

Monday, July 4 View Page
I got 3 of my 4 fruits set up with the mill fabric yesterday. On all 3 plants , so far im going with the 1st pollination. They are all around 10 ft out give or take a foot. I am growing 3rd stage growth back from the first set of sides, so that gives me another 5-6 feet of plant , so some may say that the sets are all 15 foot give or take. Despite some leaf burn from last weekend, the plants look very healthy. Last week I spread my final amendments out ( N and P ) , out ahead of the plant. The plant up front wih the covered fruit, is the 2020.5 Werner. Behind it and is the 1797 Checkon.

Monday, July 4 View Page
Im pretty sure this is the 1582 Werner. Should be day 15. I need to cut the other two off in the next few days.

Friday, July 8 View Page
Finally, a perfect female blossom on the main vine of the 2008 Neptune. Pollinated this morning ( July 8th ) around 15-16 ft, 5 lobe. I do not like the shape of the 1st one that is at day 11 today. It has good size , but had seeds in blossom and had deformed lobes, very surprised it even took.

Friday, July 8 View Page
This is #1 on the 2008 with the bad shape. It will get cut off this weekend. I still have #2 that looks better, and now the perfect # 3. The Neptune plant has really put on some big growth this week. Leaves are massive with heavy vines.

Friday, July 8 View Page
# 2 on the 2008. This had deformed lobes but was able to get pollen in, 7 days old today. Shape is decent.

Friday, July 8 View Page
I have been using these tiny cups before and after pollination. They seem to seal very well. I pinch the petals together then hold the base of the flower and carefully twist/ spin the cup down until it seals . They keep out rain also, which we may get later today.

Friday, July 8 View Page
Two upper plants, looking good. All 3rd stage vines comming back behind stumps are almost all terminated. This dramatically increases my sq footage as my seconaries are growing. Had a small outbreak of cuke beetles with the warm nights along with recent rains. Sprayed and most are gone. No signs of any other harmful bugs just some japanese beetles here and there.

Friday, July 8 View Page
Two lower plants. Have not had to water the past 3 days, we have been getting just enough rain, great weather this week.

2020.5 Werner at day 16 today. It put on 5.25" circ yesterday, which is my fastest and biggest for its age. It seems to be taking on a longer shape at this point. I will post a day 20 pic of each of my pumpkins in the future.

Day 20 for 2020.5 Werner. 173.5" ott for 122 lbs. The shape really changed the past few days ( and I like it) . Doing about 21 lbs in the past 24 hrs. Spread 1 cup of sul- po- mag under canopy of 3 plants.

Tuesday, July 19 View Page
First the bad news for the week. In the previous post, i had a pic of the 1797 Checkon fruit that was starting to show a blossom split. It never split because the fruit came to a major slow down a day or two earlier. After reading a post by Don Black, i have to agree with him. He said that when a pumpkin changes shape quickly, as in growing only on one side, the fruit will usually stop growing. That is exactly what it did. The plant is too nice to not to grow something on. I pollinated two recently on sides.

Tuesday, July 19 View Page
The 2020.5 Werner is doing very good. It is at day 27 and putting on around 31lbs a day for a 4 day average.

Tuesday, July 19 View Page
Star of the week is the 1582.5 Werner. Day 30 numbers: 260" ott around 392#. 4 day average around 40 lb a day, last 2 days i measured 51 # a day average. ( could be slightly off, the circ is s difficult to measure by myself.)

2008 Neptune stump. Upon inspection, I found some rot just starting on the left side. In the next pic, u will see the scrapings on the ground that I scraped with my knife, then dusted with captan powder. Im going to leave in uncovered during the daytime to get sun and better air flow.

I need to start checking these daily now. This is when issues start to arise.

Day 20 today for the 2008 Neptune. Ott is 179", for around 133#. This fruit is actually on a sidevine that was turned to be the new main at a young age.You would never know, and i dont think the fruit cares. Looking very good. Plant has huge leaves and all plants are still healthy.

Thursday, July 21 View Page
Here is the 2008 Neptune at day 20. Going to be light in color. Got a nice plant behind this fruit. I have high expectations for this one. This plant has massive leaves, probably from me amending too late with nitrogen ( last week in June ). It does not seem to be hurting my calcium uptake , but time will tell.

Friday, July 22 View Page
Finally getting some much needed rain this morning. Nothing severe, just nice rain showers. We were cold Tues and Wed night, but the heat is back so gains should resume.

Friday, July 22 View Page
This is to correct an above post, several back. The 1582 did NOT put on 51#'s a day for 2 days. I divided 102 by 2 days, instead of 3 days ! I should have known , lol . That is way too big of a gain for my patch. So that works out to 34 lbs.

Friday, July 22 View Page
Day 30 for 2020.5. 267.5 ott, 426 lbs, gaining 36 pounds in last 24 hrs. This fruit is smooth and easy to measure. Tossed 1 cup of kmag under plants before the 7/8" of rain we got this morning.

Friday, July 22 View Page
Since i had the tape out i checked the 2008 Neptune also. At day 21, 81cc, 26# increase in 24 hrs. 5" cc gain.

My 1582 Werner may be going down soon. Iv been seeing some greyish goo at a few main and secondaries and on the stem. Im hoping it was just some stem stress that made it leak. I moved her back this morning. It has slowed way down and in the gains so i am thinking its on the way out. Im sure i will know in a day or two.She is sitting at around 500 today.

Saturday, July 23 View Page
If you can zoom in, you may see the leakage. Stem seems solid yet.

Tuesday, July 26 View Page
I now have fans on 3 out of my 4 plants. Keeping a fan on 24/7 seems to be the ticket. I came up with the idea of cutting the bottom off of a rectangular cat litter bucket, to slide my fan in. Setting it on its side, It can draw air in from the bottom of the bucket, yet rain should not hurt it. The fan just fits in there. This is my 2020.5 stump, which was s in the best shape out of all 4.

Tuesday, July 26 View Page
The bad news for today is, what was my best stump yesterday ,(1797) is now foaming at the base. I have a pumpkin that is only around day 11. I guess i need to dig around the base and see how bad it is. I may be pulling this plant.

Tuesday, July 26 View Page
The good news is that the 2008 Neptune decided to surge last night. Did a day 25 taping. 230" ott, for 275 #. I hope this one holds together. Up to 36# aday last 24 hrs. All 3 pumpkins are atleast gaining in the upper 30's as of today. Historicly , this is when disease sets in for me. So far plants still looking good.

Tuesday, July 26 View Page
This is the day 11 open poll on the 1797 plant. I did not set vine up because i was not planning on loosing my main vine fruit. I have it leaning towards the left to try to make it roll so its more perpendicular to the main.

Tuesday, July 26 View Page
Kind of a neat shot. Fan blowing, clear cover over fan and stump, and 1582.5 Werner fruit in the background. I have never had to use a fan until this year. And i now have 3 blowing and could use a 4th.

Friday, July 29 View Page
Day 40 for the 1582.5 Werner. 318" ott, 703 #. 34.5lb average last 6 days. I thought this pumpkin was on the way out last week, with the drop in gains. I was wrong. She has a decent shape. Now i have to worry about a rib split. This plant shows the least amount of excess nitro symtoms out of all 4.

Friday, July 29 View Page
A huge leaf stalk from the 2008 Neptune.

Friday, July 29 View Page
Vein splits on the same leaf. Im seeing quite a bit of this on this plant. Im sending out a tissue sample to see how bad the nitro is and if im low on any micros.

Tissue test results were overall very good except the high nitrates. I figured it would be high but did not expect that high. I wonder if that high a number is locking up my calcium or anything else important ?? If you can answer that please email me at lewecode@verizon.net.

Finally had to cut my 1797 Checkon stump off. Lost about 50% of the plant. The remaining plant has nice young looking leaves. I have not measured the pumpkin yet, going to wait for day 30, maybe.... Fruit is on a side vine so just hoping for 700-800#. We will see.

Sunday, August 7 View Page
Bad day in the patch today, lol. I saw this happening over the past few weeks. Im not planning on getting the plant tested. Have this happening on the 1582.5 Werner and was on the 1797, but all the back half of the plant is now gone. I will post in pests n diseases section and see what you all say. Im thinking fusarium rot. Leafs are rotting at the soil line.

On a good note, i got to see this very nice sunset as i was putting the blankets on the pumps. My two best pumpkins still seem to be growing good. Tomorrow is measuring day.

My foaming 2008 stump had to be opened up and drained. This is the 2nd foamer out of 4. Drained, cleaned with peroxide and dried with paper towels, dusted with captan, then put 2 fans on it. Wait gains have slowed the past week or so, and im sure this is why. Going to really have to baby sit it now.

A big surprise is the open pollination fruit on the 1797 Checkon plant, or the half plant that is left. It really took off so I measured it today. The past 3 days it has averaged 35.6 lbs a day ! With NO stump, and its on a skinny sidevine. Just incredible. Its around 352# on day 25. The remaining plant looks great. It will be interesting to see how big this pumpkin will get. I only figured around 550, but with the way its gaining, it very well get much bigger. I will post a pic of it on Monday for the weekly patch update.

Thursday, August 11 View Page
1.75" of rain last day in a half. More possibly the next few days.

Friday, August 12 View Page
This is a side vine pumpkin on the 1797 Checkon. I got a late July 16 or 17th pollination, open pollination. I pretty much wrote this pumpkin off since it was on a skinny side vine and i cut the stump and 40% of the plant off. The rest was very healthy. Last 4 days from day 20ish to 25 ish it averaged about 34.5 lbs a day.

Friday, August 12 View Page
BES, done.... Dangit. This gives me hope to never be afraid to set on a side vine. Im sure it would never be competative , but a decent pumpkin with todays genetics can be grown. 75"-72"-111", 258" ott, 384# est , day 26 i believe. On its way to have been over 500 easily at day 30. I may try this seed next year.

Took the 1797 fruit out this am. Very big day 25 for me. About 35lbs a day from day 20-25.

Saturday, August 13 View Page
Very good rooting this year, and this a big reason for my better season. Some of the roots are over 1 inch thick comming from the bottom of the vine. This is obviously a big reason why this fruit didi so well with out a stump. The vines are very big this year from the excessive N.

Weekly numbers are holding decent. Over 2 inches of rain last week and very humid. Powdery mildew has started to set in in the big mess of a plant on the 2020.5. Need to trim terts one last time and a little weeding. Back to work today, been nice the last two weeks. Sorry no time for pics. 2008 day 45: 152" cc 2020.5 day 54 : 188"cc 1582.5 day 57 : 183" cc All down to mid 20's for gains. Tapering down in my patch.

The 1582.5 Werner, still gaining. We were tying the giant sunflower heads up and I decided to get a pic of this one. Last week, this one and the 2020.5 Werner both passed up my personal best from 2011. Tomorrow is taping day. Im expecting weights to be down with last weeks weather.

2008 Neptune, day 52. The bad stump has taken its toll on the gains. Looks thick and thumps nice, we will see.... Hopefully. Sitting around 963 lbs.

Monday, August 22 View Page
2020.5 hanging in there. This has been a problem free plant. No vine rot issues at all. Have a little powdery mildew going , but I think I can get it in check. Plant health insurance s over all very good. Day 61, 192" cc. Slowed way down the past 7 days, about 15 a day.

Monday, August 22 View Page
1582.5, day 64. 395" cc. Same gains as the other two, about 15 a day. Hopefully this weeks weather will keep the gains the same or better. Im a little concerned about a rib split as these ribs are getting very deep and now a dill ring/ sag line is forming above the blossom end. Still a long way until weigh offs.

2008 Neptune is doing well still. Cc 168". I just realized that I dont have hardly any plant out beyond the pumpkin, maybe 90 sq. ft. That is just the way this plant ended up with the tomatoes being very close.

2020.5 Werner, cc is 201" up 129 # for the week. Getting deeper ribs and more color. Also getting a few spots on the skin that have me concerned of a rib split.

Monday, August 29 View Page
Last but certainly not least is the 1582.5 Werner. At day 68 same as the 2020.5. Cc around 195", up 129# for the week. Still getting some oozing vine junctions, but seems to not be getting any worse. The main vine is very large on this plant, cant get my hand around it.

The Neptune seems to have slowed way down. Only up about 61 for the week. Cc is 172".

Monday, September 5 View Page
I got the step ladder out for a few different angles. The 1582.5 Werner also seems to have slowed way down this week. Been getting a lot of oozing on the top of the main vine to secondary junctions. Scrape off, peroxide, then let the sun and a fan hit it. Cant seem to stop it. It seems like the pumpkin is saying " no more water" and the vines are just spewing it out. Only up 68# this week. Cc is 200.5".

My 2008 Neptune. The stump has been gone for a few weeks now. This has been the most impressive pumpkin that i have ever grown, even though it is not the biggest. I wish i had about 300-400 sq ft past this fruit , but i only have around 100 sq. ft. I will be growing another 2008 next season, for sure.

A month ago, i said that my sunflowers were way behind and that i would not have anything to compete with. These things are just amazing how much the heads just keep on expanding. Pretty much zero care this season. I sprinkled some fertilizer under them one time and hand watered two or three times all season. I have a few nice ones , but no record breakers, but .....it tough to tell at 14 foot up.

This is one of the last pics of my pumpkin that i took to the Barnesville OH weigh off two weeks ago. It was grown from the 1582.5 Werner and weighed 1662.5# . Went 6% heavy, and good enough for 3rd.

Took the 2008 Neptune to Clarence NY this past Sunday. One of the nicest weigh offs that I have been to. Lots of room for fork trucks and people to move around, great location for a weigh off. The cross is 2008 Neptune x 1797 Checkon. My entry weighed 1408 # at 13% heavy. I only got 10% heavy when i taped it on the pallet, but no doubt it was at least 10% heavy. 5th place finish. I am hoping to get some seeds back to share and this is one that i plan on planting next season.

I have quite a few of these huge knots on my 2008 plant. They seem to mostly be off the first secondary and 3rd stage juctions. I am thinking the high N caused this.

Harvest time. This pumpkin probably would have never gotten this big with out the daily checks on the stump and main vine. Way back in July when the humidity started, I noticed some light rot starting on the stump. All it took was a light scraping with my pocket knife, and I put a fan on it. It dried up quickly, and gave me no more issues the rest of the season. Had i not caught that, things would most likely ended differently.

Im not sure if the weight is showing, but it went 1805.5. A great end for a great year. A big thanks goes to my wife Wendy and my kids who help me with covering with the blankets and closing of the hoop houses. The pumpkins would not have gotten to the size they got with out them helping.
