I thought I would start the year off with our new venture this year. We have never tried giant cabbage before but thought we would give it a go. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do feel free to send us an email.

Tuesday, March 3 View Page
I think the giant cabbages are looking good. Not sure if this is where I should be at for this date?

Tuesday, March 3 View Page
Today we started 255 Mitchell watermelon and some giant tomatoes. It was -5 this morning and 5 inches of snow predicted tonight. Hopefully the rest of March will be kinder.

The season is beginning to start with 4 hoops out for pumpkins and 2 portable greenhouses for watermelon and maters.

Sunday, May 3 View Page
We moved the shady trellis about 15 feet towards the center of the old patch. This was quite a project seeing it is made with 16 foot 2x4's. My two boys helped Kerry and I with the wobbly move. Hopefully this will add a couple hours of sun to the long gourd!

Sunday, May 3 View Page
Here is half of the new patch with one hoop with about 670 square feet and the tomato hut. My two sons are in this photo as they are home from college for the summer.

Sunday, May 3 View Page
Here is the other half of new patch which will be about 620 square foot pumpkin and melon hut. The small black hoops that are outlining the patch will be rabbit protectors for our giant sun flowers.

Sunday, May 3 View Page
Here we have the 1059 Vincent McGill on the left looking like an angel and the 811 Gerhardt on the right with a cot leave that is waving saying pick me. This will be a tough choice in a few weeks if both stay healthy.

Sunday, May 3 View Page

Finally got giant cabbages planted today. I had to buy some rabbit fencing as a couple of the plants got "pruned" this week.

Saturday, May 16 View Page
Here is a close up of how I am planning on feeding and watering. I also like the fence because it gives me something to attach row cover to now for shade and bugs.

Sunday, May 17 View Page
Overall it has been a decent weather week here with 2 mornings with frost but that is par for the course in May. Here is patch view 1.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
126 May. Hopefully she will like VT dirt.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
993 on the right is the hopeful keeper for genetic purposes but the 907 is ahead of it now. I will still go with 993 as long as she stays healthy.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
Pair of 907 Young's starting to run. I think I will be keeping the one on the right.

Sunday, May 24 View Page

Sunday, May 24 View Page
The tomatoes are doing well.

Sunday, May 24 View Page
We bought this little rubber-made house yesterday at Lowes and today we broke down the old wooden shed and relocated the base to be used with this one in the garden where it is too shady to grow. We assembled it in about 2 hours and took about 2 hours to break down the old wooden shed.

Eleven different varieties in 5000 square feet of garden.

Working on patch today to try to open up soil after being flooded. We received 10 inches of rain for June so far which is about 8 inches more than patch needed. Plants are very droopy now that it is sunny. Working with hoe around plants to attempt to get a little air to the roots. Pictures tomorrow.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
The patch is slowly recovering from too much rain. We have received 10 inches for the first 13 days of June. Patch view 1.

We have started to remove sunflower cages as they are tall enough to avoid the rabbits wrath. Patch view 2.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
You can see here that we removed the greenhouse cover as we could not cool it down well enough during the day. Patch view 3.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
Cabbage seems to be still growing. Even with the shade cloth it gets real wilted during the day. It always has recovered though so far.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
The rutabaga is growing well and we made a bigger hoop to keep rabbits out.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
129 Young is finally starting to vine and hopefully will find the trellis next week.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
811 Gerhardt is growing well and about 7 1/2 feet long. With all the rain I may not bury vines this year. In 2013 I buried vines and it bit me in the butt as the ground was always saturated and it stopped growth.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
126 May long gourd is starting to take off and will be on the trellis soon.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
907 Young is growing well and is just over 6 feet long.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
255 Mitchell is slowly growing but looks healthy. Greenhouse would get too hot during the day. Plant is just 27 inches long. We will see in a week if we made the right decision.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
759 Young is growing steady and is at 6 feet. The new patch is still saturated which may slow down growth this week.

Sunday, June 14 View Page
Tomatoes are doing well with a few blooms starting to open.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
Rain continued this week with a total of 2.9 inches this week as of 4 pm today with storms forecasted for tonight. That gives us almost 13 inches of rain for June! Patch view 1.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
We have decided not to bury vines this year for fear of rotting. We would rather get smaller pumpkins then no pumpkins. Patch view 2.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
The kids bought me a couple of yards of green mountain compost for fathers day and the family helped me spread it. Patch view 3.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
Cabbage seems happy so far. A few holes in the leaves. I have been spraying merit and talstar although not sure it will work.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
129 Young long gourd is getting closer to trellis. Not sure we will get a long gourd from it this late. We got a low of 39 Degrees Saturday morning. Our highs have been low 70's and too wet. We will not give up though and are just trying to keep plants healthy!

Sunday, June 21 View Page
Swede is still growing with large leaves. I don't see a base forming though so I have no clue what is happening under the soil. Ha!

Sunday, June 21 View Page
811 Gerhardt. In older part of patch that drains fastest and is doing well at 10 feet.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
993 Vincent McGill doing well in old patch and is 8.5 feet long.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
126 May is climbing up the 14.5 foot trellis and is a little over 2 feet long. If the weather drys out this should move fast.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
759 Young is the slowest in the patch so far but also in the mud. It is 7.5 feet long.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
Tomatoes are growing strong. A couple of plants have mega blooms ready to blossom.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
The greenhouse really over heated the poor 255 Mitchell. When greenhouse was up temps a lot in the 80's and heat radiating off the house got it up to 107 and the greenhouse held too much humidity. Plant appears to be recovering with new growth coming around the stump. Around 3 feet long.

Sunday, June 21 View Page
The row of Mitchell tall sunflowers are doing well with the tallest being 5.5 feet as of today. Wet and cool doesn't seem to be slowing them down.

Sunday, June 28 View Page
Our rainy streak continues with 3.5 inches of rain last week not including what we have gotten in todays storm. Patch view 1.

Sunday, June 28 View Page
Total of 13.8 inches of rain so far this June compared to our average of 3.8 inches. Patch view 2.

Sunday, June 28 View Page
We were fortunate to have off Friday afternoon and spent it with a hoop hoe. The weeds seem to grow faster in wet soil then the plants do. Patch view 3.

Sunday, June 28 View Page

Sunday, June 28 View Page

Sunday, June 28 View Page
759 Young. This plant has really been slowed by wet soil and has a few aborted secondaries. Around 10 feet long today.

Sunday, June 28 View Page
Tomatoes are growing well with a few mega blooms showing.

Sunday, June 28 View Page
255 Mitchell is starting to get out of its funk. Not sure why the greenhouse was bad for it. I will try to have a better plan next year.

Friday, July 3 View Page
We have had 2 dry days in a row but nights have been cold. It was 45 degrees this am. I am very happy to be an orange grower because they look nice even if they aren't huge.

Sunday, July 5 View Page
Let's just say it has been another tough week to be a giant vegetable grower here in northern VT. We received another 3.5 inches of rain this past week and when it was dry we had cold nights in the 40's. Patch view 1.

Sunday, July 5 View Page
The whole garden is about 2 weeks behind which we will never regain. Since June 1st we have received 19.7 inches of rain. That is an average of .56 inches per day. Patch view 2.

Sunday, July 5 View Page
We are happy to be too wet then too dry, but it still is frustrating to try to grow in. Patch view 3.

Sunday, July 5 View Page
Giant cabbage seem to be growing well. Maybe they like all the rain?

Sunday, July 5 View Page
129 Young long gourd is slowly plugging along.

Sunday, July 5 View Page

Sunday, July 12 View Page
The cabbages continue to grow well. They don't appear to be starting a head yet. If anyone has any tips feel free to email me.

Sunday, July 12 View Page
Tomatoes got a big haircut. Nothing great so far but a couple of mega blooms have taken.

Sunday, July 12 View Page
255 Mitchell is starting to grow better. Unfortunately it seems to be too late to grow a big one. The 266 Mitchell sunflowers are growing well though with the tallest just shy of 9 feet.

Sunday, July 12 View Page
The 255 Mitchell may have pollinated female but plant is only 16 linear feet so we will probably take it off.

Sunday, July 19 View Page

Sunday, July 19 View Page

Sunday, July 19 View Page
759 Young at day 12. I really like the early shape.

Sunday, July 19 View Page
255 Mitchell is starting to spread out but I am worried it may be too late. I will let it go and see if we can get anything.

Sunday, July 26 View Page
Summer weather has returned and the plants are back growing normal. The pumpkins are growing much slower than last year but are growing steady.

Sunday, July 26 View Page
We worked 8 hours yesterday weeding and the little buggers are starting to show up already. When weeds grow fast typically pumpkins do too which we are hoping for.

Sunday, July 26 View Page
Everything is healthy except for the melon but it is slowly starting to fill its spot. Patch view 3.

Sunday, July 26 View Page

My wife always names our pumpkins and this year we were so wet in June that she looked up names associated with water. Here is Clytie (993 VM) at 23 days. Not happy with shape but she should have nice color.

Sunday, July 26 View Page
This is Brooklynn (811 Gerhardt) at 26 days.

Please meet Leena (907 Young) who is 16 days old today.

Sunday, July 26 View Page

Sunday, July 26 View Page
255 is still fighting issues but still growing slowly. We will know by the end of the week if we have one pollinated.

Sunday, August 16 View Page

Here is a picture of the girdling of the giant sunflowers.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
This ends up slowly killing the sunflower as the leaves turn yellow from the bottom to the top.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
Giant cabbages still seem to be happy and are starting to head.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
Cabbage photo from above! They are actually very pretty plants.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
993 Vincent McGill around 400 pounds. The blossom end rolled over about 3 weeks ago.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
811 Gerhardt is also around 400. The flooding really stunted the growth early and it never picked back up.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
907 Young around 350 pounds. Not the shape of her momma but going to be orange.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
759 Young. Not sure where all the color went from her back ground but we are happy with her shape. Around mid 500s today.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
129 Young lg is coming along with 3 pollinated on it. The two twins are 4 days old and pencil thin and 18 inches. The oldest is 16 days today and averaging about 6 inches a day. The 126 May is growing well as a plant but had a lg abort or just stall at 30 inches. It is not turning black but just hasn't grown in a week. I may have one other pollinated but it is real young still.

Sunday, August 16 View Page
