Might as well start the diary with the momma of the one of ours that will see dirt in our patch. Didn't quite beat last years, but she came pretty close.

1368 Liggett is grandmother on both sides. Can't wait to see what she'll do.

Here is the lineup for Team Weston 2012.
Desired crosses will be:
1050 Weston x 1566 Rodonis
1566 Rodonis x 1331.3 VanHook
Will decide on the 1331.3 VanHook pollinator after we know what growers close to us are growing, and what is available when we need to pollinate.

A couple of people asked to see how I restricted the output on my cheaper misterduster. It doesn't have to be this complex, you just have to restrict the hose so very little fluid can go through it. I couldn't find a valve that I could buy that was a feedthrough and you could "set and forget" without haveing to worry about it moving accidentally and putting too much out, so I made my own. Teresa will be sending me a coupld of pictures of it to add to this drawing.
It is a 2x4 block with a hole drilled a tiny bit larger than the tubing, then a slot cut exactly the size of a 3/8 bolt. I just used the shoulder of a bolt (no threads) and rounded the bottom of the head even with the shoulder. The remaining part of the head keeps if from slipping through the slot and I used a big hammer to muchroom the other side to keep it from slipping back though the other way. I ground a flat spon on the top of the shoulder where the thumb screw pushes it down. I used a piece of heavy angle iron to make the top and threaded it for a 1/4 20 bolt. I attached the metal plate to the 2x4 with 4 wood screws. I made a wingnut for the bolt head out of a small piece of oak and sunk the head into it so it won't spin. I made the length of the bolt so that the "wingnut" bottoms out against the metal plate right where I want it. (so its tight) This way it never has to be adjusted. Then I use the ball valve that came withthe machine to turn spray completely off or on. I hope this makes sense.

It's finally time. Our club has decide to grow one of our own as a competition within the competition. All participating growers will grow the same seed and whoever gets the biggest one to scale will be the winner. This years chosen seed was the 1436.5 Liggett. Teresa and I are participating, so the 1331 VanHook was bumped -- Sorry John, we only have 3 spots and we have to grow our own. So new line up is 1566 Rodonis, 1436.5 Ligget, 1150 Weston.
Germination was started on the 21st. Plants ready for transplant this evening.
Backups were started on the 27th.
Let the season begin!

Not sure there is going to be desired pollen (525estPuricelli) on Sunday, Not a lot of males opening on any of them yet, one or two here and there, will have to see tomorrow. It will get whatever is available if none on Johnathon's plant are open.

1566 Rodonis is now in second in length at 12 ft 5 inches, with a kin one node back from the tip, but the sides are a little shorter than the other two plants still, so square footage wise it is still bringing up the rear. It is still better than any other plant in previous years at this point, about 10 days ahead looking back at pictures.
IF pollination occurs in 10 days, pumpkin will be 120 days old on weighoff day -- Oct 17.

1436.5 Liggett day 45. The plant had a mishap in the wind the other day and got 3 cracks in succession across the main about 2 ft from the end. They weren't completely through, but it was right in front of the first 2 kins and I was skeptical about leaving them since they were about half way through, deep enough to disrupt the flow of nutrients and on both sides of the vine. I had a sneaking suspicion they would get worse as the vine grew especially when trying to make the turn at the kin. It's still early so we cut the main, and turned the side to the front. Let's see what she does. Current length is 11 ft 7 inches. Since we cut two off of the main, it will be a few days before a new one shows up on this one. The sides are throwing females on the tips though, so it won't be long. The sides are longer on this plant than the other two. Square footage wise this one is probably still in the lead, but not ahead of the Weston by very much at all. And truth be told Johnathon's 525est Puricelli may be out in front in square footage now. They are all doing extremely well.

Teresa is Getting 'r done. Making a nice foundation for the 1180.
First a bed of sand leveled out. This will raise the pumpkin a couple of inches and give it a nice firm well drained base. Should protect from water and those pesky mice. A piece of 1 inch open pore (cheap white stuff) styrofoam goes on top of this and then mill fabric from Dan H. So far this has been successfull for us and resulted in very flat bottomed pumpkins.

These are our best pumpkins for the last 3 years at 17 DAP and each the offspring of the one above it.
I know the first 30-40 days doesn't give a true picture of the total outcome, but I like to compare things anyway, it gives me something to do. I don't have OTT this early on the 2010 or 2011 so I re-scaled them so the basketball was the same size and then drew a circle around the 2010 and 2011 and super imposed them on our current front runner. This only gives a two dimensional picture, but still makes me feel pretty good, especially since I think this years is longer than the two previous years were.

It's so hot here (Kuwait) that Palm trees wilt.

Teresa got it propped up so hopefully it doesn't roll over on the blossum end. This along with the shape makes it hard to measure. Still the slowest grower, but still gaining steam. So far everything Bill told me is spot on. This is the best looking plant (except Johnathon's) we have so I think it will definetly go the distance, If so and Bill's predictions continue to hold true we are in for a PB on this one, but then again 86 more days till weighoff....anything can happen, take it one day at a time.

Looking mean, growing well, not putting on the big numbers yet but getting there. Last 5 day average is 28 lbs a day, which is up from 22 lbs a day previous 5 days, so going in the right direction. I'm ok with steady and rising. Tissue test pulled tonight to get a look at how our adjustments are doing. Plant is good and strong and healthy, if the deep rib holds, I think (hope) this is going to be a biggun. I guess we will see -- stay tuned...

1566 Rodonis bringing up the rear at 585 lbs day 50. I is still very consistant and is hard to measure because of it's shape and the big ramp that had to be built behind it to keep it from growing over on it blossum. It sounds almost completely solid. The shoulders are getting growth splits so I still feel good about it.

1566 Rodonis 68 DAP. Growing well, still very steady. Considering a split in main vine very early on. Found a soft spot on the stump last week. Scrapped brown tissue off, sprayed with 27% peroxide twice a day, dusted with captan, fan and cover has healed it --- for now.
NOTE: wear gloves when working with peroxide stronger than you buy in the store, it will burn your skin.
