Thursday, May 10 View Page
I started the sunflowers in 4” pots today. I am still going to direct seed some sunflowers in the ground once it warms up but for right now, these will be my back-up plants.

Wednesday, May 16 View Page
I transplanted all the pumpkins and squash today into one gallon pots as they are becoming root bound and it will still be over a week before they will be in the ground.

Saturday, May 19 View Page
I put planting my tomatoes off a few weeks later from last year as I have found that they are ripening too early for both Picton Fair and Wellington Pumpkinfest weight offs. Hope that planting them this late will be the right timing for the weigh offs.

Sunday, May 20 View Page
The sunflowers are starting to come up nicely! The Langridge 192” seem to be a more aggressive seed then the Langridge 202”.

Sunday, May 20 View Page
The African Kettle Gourds are also coming along great! They are starting their second true leaf and are a nice deep green colour!

Sunday, May 20 View Page
Here is a picture of my tall corn. As you can see, some of it is going yellow do to being root bound. I am hoping to get them into the ground within the next couple of days.

Sunday, May 20 View Page

Sunday, May 20 View Page
I am very happy with how well the watermelons are doing! The plants are healthy and strong ready to go in the ground soon.

Sunday, May 20 View Page
I was able to get my hands on two cabbages from the GVGO seminar this spring and here they are. I am very happy with how well they are doing and hope to have some really good luck with these plants. They will also be going into the ground within the next week.

Monday, May 21 View Page
Prepared the sunflower, tall corn and pumpkin ground today. Dug a foot deep into the soil where the sunflowers and tall corn are going to go and put some fresh goose manure and straw down from the barn. Then, I covered it back up with the dirt and dad came along and tilled it up for me. As for the pumpkins, dad sectioned off the field this year for where the plants will go. He worked up the ground today as well as took the pallet forks and drove them four feet into the ground to loosen up the dirt where the pumpkins will be planted. Then he dug out about a two foot deep whole and put some good old cow manure in. They look great and ready to be planted now.

Saturday, May 26 View Page
Today was busy planting all the giant pumpkins and squash in the patch! We planted 40 and still have about 6 back-up plants in the greenhouse that were started later in case we lose some. The picture is of the wagon filled with pumpkin and squash plants ready to be planted.

Sunday, May 27 View Page
Here is a part of our giant pumpkin patch. Dad tilled it all up today and now all we need is a good rain as we are very dry here.

Sunday, May 27 View Page
Today we planted the rest of the giants except for the field pumpkins in the ground. We have the cabbage, cantaloupe, kohlrabi, kettle gourds, watermelon and rutabaga in a separate patch from the giant pumpkins and squash this year. Today was a very windy day on the plants. Here is one of the cabbages.

Sunday, May 27 View Page
The watermelons are coming along well with a very nice green colour to them. Now that they are in the ground, I am hoping that they will take off now.

Sunday, May 27 View Page
This year we are trying another new giant vegetable, rutabaga. This is one of the rutabaga plants. It is small but I am sure it will grow nice and big!

Sunday, May 27 View Page
The kettle gourds are also looking great with the fourth true leaf starting to come out.

Sunday, May 27 View Page
The cantaloupes are growing well with the third true leaf starting. Hoping to get a cantaloupe to a weigh off this year without it rotting on me!

Sunday, June 24 View Page
The pumpkin patch is coming along great this year. We have bigger plants this year than last year at this time. Here is a look at the 2012 patch.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
This is one of the seven rows of giant pumpkins and squash we have in. The first plant is the 1048.5 Huffman that is doing very well with a deep green colour to it. We started pollinating pumpkins today, which is a couple weeks earlier from last year for pollinating. The 1088.8 Nieuwenhoff and 513.5 Vincent were both open today and we pollinated them with self. It is very exciting around here to know that we did our first pollinations today.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
The sunflowers have been growing excellent this year. They range from 1’ 5” tall to 4’ 7” tall.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
The tall corn is also doing very well. They are also ahead of last year’s tall corn. They are around 5 feet tall.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
Here is one of our two cabbages. They are also doing very well with a nice colour to their leaves.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
The cantaloupes are just starting to run. They had a bit of an infestation of cucumber beetles but we have taken care of them now.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
The African Kettle Gourds are also running now with healthy green leaves and they are looking great.

Sunday, June 24 View Page
This year we have had a horrible time with our watermelon. We started off with 12 plants and now we are down to 4 plants. We aren’t really sure what happened to the plants, but this is the best plant out of all of them. The other 3 plants are a bit yellow but they are coming back to life.

Monday, June 25 View Page
The 1414.4 Bryson was open today. I pollinated it with the 1312 Sproul. It is very exciting to know that we had another female flower open today.

Monday, June 25 View Page
I am very happy with how the carrots are doing. This is one of the three that I have planted. I just got them into the ground today, and hope that they take off.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
We have had no rain for another week and the ground is very dry with our temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius and over every day. We put another inch of water on the plants today.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
My carrots are slowly growing. As you can see, the ground is very dry so I have been watering the carrots every other day.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
I am very impressed with how well the Kohlrabi are doing. I lost one but I still have four growing. They are also getting watered every few days.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The watermelons have taken a long time to take off but they are now coming along good. This is the biggest plant but they are all looking very healthy. I am sure that watering is helping them is a big help.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The cantaloupes are also starting to take off. They are all around this size looking healthy and enjoying a cool drink of water every other day.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The rutabagas are starting to size up and are coming along great. They are staying a healthy green and enjoying the water.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The kettle gourds are starting to run like crazy and take over their section of the garden. I am not watering them as they are in the lower section of the garden and the hot weather does not seem to be bothering them.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The cabbages do not like the heat, even though they are getting watered. They do not want to wrap this year.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The tomatoes are not overly big but they are a very healthy green. We are also watering the tomatoes and I will soon stake them.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
The sunflowers are growing really well with me watering them every day. The sunflowers are around 6’ tall.

Saturday, July 7 View Page
I can’t get over how tall the tall corn is this year. It is just over 8’ tall and still growing well. I am also watering it every day.

Saturday, July 14 View Page
We haven’t had any rain for over two weeks now so we are watering again today. We put another inch of water on the patch as this week is supposed to stay up in the 30’s without the humidity.

Sunday, July 15 View Page
Today my sister and I put up shade houses for all the seven squash we have growing this year as we don’t want them to get sun burned.

Here's a look at our sunflower and our tall corn. Sadly, the sunflowers headed out early this year and the tallest one is around 13' 6". As for the tall corn, it did very well again this year reaching around 17 feet and one is just tasselling out. Hopefully the sunflowers do better next year.

Over the past two weeks, we have lost three pumpkins and two squash. We are sad to say that the 1167 Hunt, 1243 Colbert, 1203 Shymanski and two of the 905 Vincent’s have rotted on us. We still have four squash growing in the field but we might be pulling the 692 Langridge soon. Over the past five days, we have had 5” of rain and cold nights so the pumpkins have slowed down in growing rate.
