This is my 1124 Reid. The plant was the best plant that I have ever had. When the pumpkin was about 20 days old I noticed the main vine had a soft spot on it 1 inch long. It was 4 ft before the pumpkin, I havn't had a vine do that before. It is taping just under 500 pounds still putting on 6 pounds a day.I think it will go heavy. Because of the rottern vine the pumpkin is only been fed by 150 sq ft of plant. It was crossed with the 754 Dill-Mac my biggest pumpkin.

The 754 Dill-Mac weighed 385.1 kg. New Victorian state record, beating the old record by 128 kg. About 5 % heavy Who knows how big this one would have got as it was still putting on 15 pounds a day when the rain came.

Wednesday, February 29 View Page
The main newspaper in Victoria somehow found out about the giant marrow and the big pumpkin. They came out today to do a story, they also did some video footage. They were here for over 4 hours. They took lots of photos.

Wednesday, February 29 View Page
The 385 kg pumpkin was grown off about 250 sq ft, as this patch is narrow only 13 ft wide. It started as a double vine, at 6 ft out i cut the end off as most of the side vines were normal. It was grown about 14 ft from the stump.

I'm doing a little early planting experiment this year, with 4 plants. 2 will be grown in a greenhouse and 2 will start in the greenhouse, and when they start to vine they will be trained outside. I'm starting them 5 weeks earlier than I have ever started seeds before. The theory is to try and get a pollination about 25-30 days before the longest day. More sunlight bigger pumpkin ??????

The 1425 seed started in the big pot already, so no need to transplant yet.

I started 6 seeds today they are 957 Wursten (1421 X self ), 1536 Marsh (1180 X 1161 ) 1342 Marsh ( 1674 X 1810 ) I don't think that this seed will germinate as the seed tip is broken due to the travel to Australia. I really liked this seed. my 484 ( 220 kg ) (1318 X 1124 ) and 907 Wagler ( 924 X 1098 ) and the 710 Wagler ( 1789 X 1723 ) The best 4 will go into the new patch at my sister's house. This patch will never flood, and is drier than my main patch. My main patch is still too wet to work the ground. Hopefully it dries up soon, so that I can get it ready.

Today we had the hottest November day on record 39.5 C ( 103 F ) I did have 3-4 young leaves burn on most plants due to the change of weather. The week before the temps were in the 23 C - 26 C range (73-78 F ) then all of a sudden a very hot day. It souldn't knock the plants too much.

Another view of some of the patch. The calf straw/hay is working well to slow the weeds. It's the first year I have tried it. This photo is before I buried the vines. I haven't buried many vines, in the last week or so due to the work on the farm. It will take me a while to bury all the vines. ( over 30 plants, I KNOW I'M CRAZY ) I won't grow this many next year. I normally grow 10-15.
