OK the RD1 weigh off was today. It was great fun. The Whangarei winner was the Burtons. (Hope I've spelt their name right.)721 kg (1589.5 lb I think). It was huge and beautiful. Great to see one this big in NZ.

Here is a little info on the 1589.5 Burton. It was grown on the 1724 Harp and crossed with the 1536.5 Van Kooten. I'm sure these lovely folks will be able to give you more accurate info. But as I know it their big one was grown 13 foot approx down the main vine. It was the third on the vine and they were careful to get one growing on a good angle.

The Burtons used horse manure and had to grow on top of clay (which many of us have in NZ). They overcame this and have these great results to show for it. They also over came the powdery mildew problem with "Fungus fighter". They did use Mychorrizal. And were careful with their watering programme to water the roots and to feed the leaves with fish and seaweed on top.

Hope this info will help any new growers in NZ. Just shows you we can do it here too. Now lets see if we can't build on this. (I have some work to do!)
