This years diary will be much smaller compared to last years. I have some megaton and os cross giant cabbages that I started about 3 weeks ago. I have some 193 Whites and 194 Holloway melon seeds up, about 1 week old. Started some peppers and tomatoes a few days ago. Line up for pumpkins : 1060 Zoellner 1193 Snyder 1274 Wolf 1157 Zappa est I am going to try 1 or 2 field pumpkins.81 wolfs. I may try one of my 856 est and do a flag pattern or two and get a few porch pumpkins. As far as backups, not sure yet.

Managed to get two hoops up about 3 weeks ago. I got 2 early plants out, the 1060 Zoellner and 1274 Wolf.Back ups are the 1157 Zappa beside the 1060, and another 1274 Wolf next to the other 1274. Andy, those split 1274's germed very fast !!, nothing wrong with them ! They have been out for 10 days now. Soil temp is around 50 degrees. Cold, wet, and very cloudy the last 2 weeks with only a few peaks of sun.

Cabbages needed to be in the ground 2 weeks ago but the garden is too wet to work in.

Started the 1193 Snyder, 2- 1157 Zappa, and 2- 856 Zappa's on Tues. morning. They are all in starter mix as of yesterday 4-21-11.

I transplanted the cabbages last week out in the garden in between all the rain.

I started the 1193 Snyder, some of my 1157's, and some of my 856 seeds about 2 weeks ago. All are looking well. I started them in 2 gallon pots, as I may need to keep them potted longer since their is no end to the rainy forcast.

I managed to get a hoop house up in my old patch where I will be putting in two 81 Wolfs.I started them today .This area of the old patch has a lot of organic material, and I was surprised at how well it drained. I got the hoop up just before more rain came in.

I have never seen a dandylion like this one. It appears to be 4 or 5 that are fused together. The stem was almost 3/4 of an inch wide.

This is a 1274 Wolf, slowly growing in all this cold, dark ,wet weather.

Monday, May 2 View Page
On the right is a 1060 Zoellner and the backup on the left is my 1157. The 1060 is my best looking plant at the moment. It is around 20 inches across at nearly 3 weeks in the ground. The soil temp is 59 degrees this morning. I am sure the cold temps are holding it back a little. Roots are definately growing though.

This is one of my giant cabbages I transplanted last week. They started getting some yellowish to rust colored leaves on the bottom of the plants while they were still in the pots. Probably some sort of deficiency, since they were in those 1 gallon pots too long.I put a lot of old manure in their mounds so hopefully once the roots get to the new soil, those leaves will turn back to their normal color.

Some of these next few pics are out of order. They were on the other disc and these may be of importance if I grow a monster with the pumpkin pro myco. They were put in early, on 4/12/11. That was the last dry spell we have had since earlier that week. Here I added some to the planting holes for the two 1274 wolfs, the 1060 Zoellner, and the back ups in those hoops.

Thank you Tom at the extreme Pumpkin Store for the great sale on the Pumpkin Pro.

This was taken on 4/16/11, trying to keep the rain off my planting site. Seems to be a loosing battle. We got just under 1 inch of rain yesterday, off to a good start for May as well.

81 Wolfs (field pumpkins)are all up this morning. I may put them out Tues. or Wed. evening, along with the 1193 Snyder.

Wednesday, May 11 View Page
Planted the 1193 Snyder on 5-9-11 and got my 1157 in the ground on 5-10-11. Two of my 856 plants should be out tonight , 5-11-11.

The 1060 Zoellner has been out for 30 days now. It is my best plant , laying down and starting to go. I will be cutting the backup plant in a day or two. The 1274 Wolf is doing ok, but still has a yellowish color to it. Patch is finally drying out !!

This is my 1157 dmg seedling.

On the right is the 1193 Snyder,on the left is another 1157.

Saturday, May 14 View Page
Both are 1274 Wolfs. Kind of strange how the plants that are in the center of the mound, are the ones that are doing the best. But I will take it !

Saturday, May 14 View Page
These are both of my 856 est's 2010's. I am hopeing they produce a nice orange pumpkin. They will both be grown in a flag pattern, around 10 ft wide x 25 foot long. I started them in my compost instead of promix to see if I noticed a difference in size. They were my biggest seedlings yet.

Saturday, May 14 View Page
The plant on the left is the 1060 Zoellner (best plant so far) and on the right is a 1157 Zappa. The 1060 main is 3 foot long. It has been in for 33 days. My 1157 looks good too but it is getting the knife tomorrow :(

Sunday, May 29 View Page
Some stats : My 1157, 3 feet, down and looking good. 1193 Snyder, 3.5 feet, down and running. This plant is looking very thick and is producing a lot of leaves near the stump. I pruned a mess of them yesterday. Very heavy vine at this early in the game. 1274 wolf, around 8 ft long and sides are 3 ft long.1st female is around 6 ft out. I will let that one go and try to pollinate the next one that I see developing now. 1060 Zoellner is around 14 ft out with sides 3.5 ft long. I pollinated 1 yesterday just for practice. Too close (6 ft out) and I never set the vine up.I hope another one develops soon. I want to extend my patch by 10 more feet in length to make it an even 100 feet. My main vine on the 1060 is at the edge now and growing fast.I am hopeing to get it tilled up in 2 or 3 days weather permitting.Patch is still a very, soggy mess and it needs tilled bad. Very compacted from all the rain. I still have amendments to put down.

My cabbages are really taking off now, around 18 inches across. pics for next update.

1274 Wolf, around 10 ft long. Hopp house is coming down in a day or two.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
1060 Zoellner, main is 15 feet long. Pollinated my first keeper this morning around 13 feet out. Got the vine set and ready to go. It was warm today, I hope the pollination takes.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
1193 Snyder is 7.5 feet long. Had to pull up the sides of the hoop this afternoon because the side vines started to touch the inside of the plastic. This is a really nice looking plant.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
My 1157 . This plant is very easy to work with, just like mama ( the 763 Young was ).And the vine color looks the same as the 763's did. It is about 6.5 feet long and doing great.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
Planning on doing my first bayer drench tonight because I believe I saw a svb flying around my plants !!!

Saturday, June 4 View Page
My two 856's are breaking out of the ends of the hoop they are in. I think I may have put one of them in the wrong way. It kept on trying to do a backflip on me, even when it was cross staked down. It now has a spot where the main is 6 inches off the ground with a kink in the main. It is solid and in good shape still. I may through some dirt under it just to be safe.

Giant cabbages are looking great. Around 20 inches across and starting to really grow. Base ball sized heads are starting to develope.

I think that last pic was too big to download. Here is one of them.

Saturday, June 4 View Page
I was spraying some weed killer a few days ago on an area that was not tilled yet. I just noticed that one of my 856 plants looks to be badly burned on half of the leaves. I was using very low pressure and the wind was light to almost nothing ,but it may not make it.I was about 10-12 feet away. Time will tell. If it dies, I think I will put in a few rows of sweet corn. That would make a good wind break also.

Wednesday, June 15 View Page
1060 Zoellner, fruit is 10 days old, as of yesterday the 14th of June. Strange how some of the older secondaries are shorter than the newer ones. Fruit seems to be growing good , even with temps in the mid forties at night.

Wednesday, June 15 View Page
A closer look at the 1060 Zoellner fruit. It is 23 inches in circ at day 10. About the size of a large catalope.

Wednesday, June 15 View Page
This is the 1274 Wolf fruit at 8 days. I am not happy with the fruit / vine posision. I will try to make adjustments when we get some warmer days.

Wednesday, June 15 View Page
I believe this one is the 1193 Snyder. I am prepping the vine for a pollination in several more days. Plant is looking great.

Wednesday, June 15 View Page
This plant is my 1157 dmg est from last season. Looking great also.I am going to cross it with the 1274 Wolf, to put some HEAVY genes in it.

Wednesday, June 15 View Page
Some giant cabbages. I planted two varieties, os cross and megaton, but dummy me forgot which kind was planted where ! I will be able to tell in a few weeks , because the os cross, will get a flat head and the megatons will stay round.

This is two 81 Wolf field pumpkins grown very close back to back. These are growing even faster than all my AG's.They are at least 12 ft long now.

Pollinated first one on the 1193 Snyder this morning.Nice 5 lobe. Crossed it with the 1060 Zoellner. The 1193 is producing rather oblong females. I did not measure, but it is at least 12-13 foot out.

1060 Zollner at day 20. Very dissapointing measurements. 39"x 39"x 58" circ = 136 ott, 63.1 pounds. ALL 5 of my pumpkins were bigger last year at day 20, some being double and one being nearly 3 times the size. I am wondering if all of the nutrients leached out with all the rain in April and May. The weather has been great here the last several weeks, warm and getting some rain this week.

Cuke beetles have been bad this week. I had to spray twice, once with ortho and bayer the second time. They must be able to eat quite a bit before the poison gets them. I found some dead ones under this leaf that they devoured.

These are two 193 Whites (09) planted back to back. Some of the side vines are very thick.I was so behind with all the bad weather, they were in a large container for two months. They went from the bucket right in the ground with no hoop house this year. They are behind my melons from last year.Hopefully I can keep disease from hitting them as early as it did last year.

Pollinated my 1157 x 1274 Wolf yesterday, June 23rd.Fruit has a great vine possision but the vine is slightly kinked right behind the stem of the fruit. I think it will be fine.

No, I didn't give the plant any of those blue pills, HA !! This is on of my 81 wolf field pumpkins. I think it is around a week old. First time for me to grow these, so maybe that is a normal stance for those.

Day 10 for the 1193 Snyder. It really grew a lot last night. It is the size of a nerf football, looking good !! I am pretty excited about this one.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
This is my first 1157 on the main. Day 10, just a little smaller than a vollyball. This plant is very aggressive growing just like the 763 Young was last year.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
1193 Snyder at day 14. I culled its twin this morning, which was only 8 inches away on the next node. I pollinated them the same day. Looks like I made a good decision on which one to set the vine up for. I have one more going that is further out on the main, which will get culled in a week and a half or so.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
1274 Wolf at day 27. Finally picking up some in weight gains. 20 pounds/ day the last 2.Pretty sad for day 27 but maybe it will be one of those slow and steady growers like the 1596 Wallace was.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
1274 Wolf plant, still has some space to fill in. It is a nice low to the ground plant, good on the windy days, but harder to apply spray.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
1060 Zoellner at day 29. It will definitely have nice color, but it is getting ugly at a young age. I hope it is not cracking inside already. It was a perfect 4 lobe flower like most of the females are on this plant with very long stems. It has averaged about 17 pounds/day the last 4 days. It seems to be picking up some with the warmer nights. The main must be between 25 and 30 feet now, I will let it grow a little longer, maybe for another week. It has a seconday that is almost as long. I turned it forward (90 degrees) to run in the direction of the main. It seems like the nitrogen is really kicking into this plant the last week because the last several leaves on each seconday are much larger than the earlier leaves closer to the main. Maybe the warmer temps have a play in that also.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
The 1060 fruit looks much nicer from the side.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
Pollinated my 856 est this am with 1060 flowers.I will have to call it an open pollination because I did not tie it shut.I was expecting it to open tomorrow. I have 2 of these plants in back to back. growing flag patterns with both. These should produce nice orange pumpkins. Pics next time.

Sunday, July 3 View Page
My melon plants really filled out the last week. I pollinated two within the last two days. One took for sure. I will call it day 3 for both of them. Open poll on both, but all I have are 193 Whites.

1060 Zoellner day 35 on 7-9-11. Both left and right sides have sunk in some, and the top of the blossem end is rolling over. OTT 237", 289 pounds.

Sunday, July 10 View Page
1274 WOLF day 33, 229", 262 pounds.Still holding great shape and looking young, but just not putting on the pounds like last years fruits. NOTE FOR NEXT YEAR : I am convinced that they are not getting enough water. Last year I used over head watering (sprinklers)which put down a lot of water fast, and this year I went to drip tape. I don't think I am putting enough water down with the tape, so the last few days I have been putting a lot more down. The plants, fruit and weeds seem to be responding.Better late than never. I probably lost 150-200 pounds ffrom not watering enough.

Sunday, July 10 View Page
1193 Snyder day 20. 176" 126 pounds, around 15 #'s a day. That is more like it! This pumpkin is doing great. It has a long shape and starting to get wider.

Stem on my 1157 fruit. It went from a very good grower at day 16, to a hault around day 20. I found that the stem is oozing liqued all over it. Tough to see in the picture, but it is leaking all around it, and it is not clear. The vine looks great still. It will get cut off. I have a few growing on sides that are open pollinated. What is it ?

Sunday, July 17 View Page
1274 has never really put big weight gains on. Day 41 averaging 18 pounds a day for the last 8 days.ott 267.5, 407 pounds. Starting to cantalope and staying very white.

Sunday, July 17 View Page
1060 is my slowest grower. Day 43,261.5 ott, 381 pounds. 11 pounds a day average the last 8 days. Plants all look great so I am not sure why the are not gaining better than they are.

Sunday, July 17 View Page
The 1193 Snyder is my best grower.Day 31, 249 " ott, 333 lbs. 26 pounds a day average the last 8 days. The shape is like a flattened egg.

This is a pic of my 1157 plant. Healthy looking. maybe the fruit just aborted around day 20 ?

Monday, July 18 View Page
Well, this is the one from my 1157 seed that must have either aborted or has some kind of infection. The stem was oozing all around it.It quit growing somewhere between day 18 and 21.It was one of my biggest day 20 fruits. I weighed it and it was 156 pounds.Too young to have any mature seeds. The crack was from me rolling it out of the patch. More compost.

1193 Snyder day 35, 291"ott, 523 pounds. 27 pounds a day average the last 7 days. It seems to have dropped the last several days even with the rain we got.Not good.Should be totally dead ended this week.

Sunday, July 24 View Page
1274 Wolf day 48, 276" ott, 448 lbs. 6 lb a day average last 7 days. 1060 Zoellner day 50, 264 ott,394 lbs. Only getting 1 0r 2 pounds a day.Really bad. Both plants look great and are still trying to grow. I am still cutting terts off here and there. They will be totally dead ended this week.

Sunday, July 24 View Page
I have a small plant from my 856 est, less than 300 sq ft. It has a really nice shaped and colored pumpkin on it. It will be an open poll since I did not mark down. It appears to be gaining nicely. We will see if the pattern continues with this one. I will post a pic of it next time.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
The 1193 Snyder is my best grower this year. Gains have dropped a bit this week, 17 lbs a day the last 6 days. Day 47, ott is 335" for 790 lbs. cc is 162", it is pretty flat looking. Starting to get ribs and some salmon color this week. Time to hammer in some fertilizer

Another pic from the blossom end of the 1193.The stem end looks almost identical.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
The 1274 Wolf has looked the same for the past 3 weeks. It has not been gaining much at all, maybe a few pounds the last two weeks. I am pulling it out tomorrow. If I remember right, it was crossed with the 1060 Zoellner, which was an orange beauty.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
The stem of the 1274 fruit. It had a small brown soft spot last week. I treated it with captan after I scaped the rot out.Now the entire stem is turning brown.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
This one is from my seed the 856 est Zappa 2010.It was around 14% heavy . It will be a very orange fruit if it makes it to mature a few more weeks. It is a small flag pattern 250-300 sq ft. I used a lot of the 1060 pollen to add more orange genetics but I just can't confirm this one , so it is open. It is around day 30-35, again nothing in my notes on when this one was pollinated for sure. It taped at 269.5, for 418 pounds. 13 #'s a day the last 6 days.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
The 1060 Zoellner is getting cut off tomorrow also. It has not grown at all the past 2 or 3 weeks. When I checked on it today the stem was very rotten. I cut it from the vine and tried to move it. When I put my left hand down on the bottom left side I felt mush. I looked and it appears the bottom is all rotten. Their won't be any lifting for this one. I will put a c-clamp on the mine belt and see if my tractor can pull it out down to my compost pile. This 1060 Zoellner seed is a great orange producer for sure.

Saturday, August 6 View Page
This is a pic of the 1060 stem, very mushy. Look at how orange the fruit is.

1193 Snyder - day 54, 349 ott, put on 100 pounds last week. Slowing down but looking good. My healthiest plant by far. Ribs are getting deeper, and more orange. 856 Zappa is slowing down as well but much younger. Skin still looks very young. It is close to 500 pounds now.

Saturday, August 20 View Page
Another one goes down:( This was the 2nd one on this plant to rot/ abort or some other problem. I am not sure if I should plant this seed again. I read that disease can sometimes be carried in the seed. The plant that grew my 1157 dmg last year, developed an infection. After I harvested the fruit in early August, I decided to see if I could set a few for fall decoration. Almost all of them rotted between day 10 and 20. And this is exactly what has happened this year on this plant. The 1157 plant is getting pulled out this week.

Saturday, August 20 View Page
I have two pumpkins left from the six plants that I started this season. The 1193 Snyder, and my seed, the 856 est from 2010. They are both doing decent.

Monday, August 22 View Page
1193 Snyder is still growing, getting uglier every day. Day 62, 364 ott, 1010 lbs est. 14.7 pounds per day the last 8 days. I am hoping to have this fruit put on another 200 pounds in the next 6 weeks. I am concerned with the deep ribbing, that it could get a rib split.Only positive is that it is slowing down in growth every week, so hopefully that will keep it from pulling apart.

Monday, August 22 View Page
My 856 est 2010 has really slowed down. Only 6 lb a day the last 8 days. ott is 293.5" for 533 pounds. Again, I must be very low on nutrients in my soil.

1193 Snyder was taping 386" for a est of 1202 lbs. Weighed in at 1217.5. A new pb that I will take with the tough spring weather. The pumpkin was harvested at 101 days old and was still growing. Had a great day at the ovgpg weighoff with my family.

I carved this up for a Labor Day party. It was supposed to look like a shark, but I think it looks more like a flathead catfish, LOL !!. The kids loved it, and was one of the best tasting melons ever. Lots of compliments on the taste and carving.
