The missus isn't too happy when it gets cold at night. The top of this refrigerator serves as evening quarters to these 10 plants. Eight 281's One 1370 & one 500 Northrup are germinated but still below grade. We're still waiting for the 869 & the soon TBA seed.

Seed germinating chamber. High tech stuff here. An old cooler with a drug store heating pad. On the pad is a towel & a mail order catalog to moderate the heat. Soaked seeds at 90°F in a 50/50 mix of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide & water for 8 hours. Then they go into sterilized ziploc sandwich bags with a small piece of sterilized paper towel.

May 1st: The 1370 Rose & 500 Northrup are first up as well as 8 of my 281.6 Jepsen seeds. Here are the cut Sewer & Drain pipe pots that I use. Two are hinged with small brass piano hinges. The other two are simply duct taped together. These range in depth from 12-15" which usually gives a seedling one week before the roots hit the bottom & start turning.

The 869.5 Calai popped this morning so into the pot it goes. This one also received some Tera Vita brand Hum-Amend & Azomite to see if it makes a difference in seedling vigor. All else is the same.

Sunday, May 20 View Page
First in is the 500 Northrup from Danny Dill. This seedling had a rough start. First it trouble shedding the seed coat then the cots themselves were somewhat damaged. It is way behind the other seeds that I started at the same time.

Because we left a 4 foot buffer all the way around our patch we ended up with 72' rather than the full 80' in length. To make matter worse, the last 10' of patch ponded during the last heavy rain event. So I rearranged the layout today in response. This is the now wind protected home to a 981 Zunino - Thank you Vince Zunino!

Hey Zacary! This is my son Stephen. Kids work on Giant Pumpkins too. Here Stephen is pruning off tertiary vines. These are vines that grow off the secondary or side vines. Allowed to grow, tertiary vines would make a real mess of things & their growth would take away from the growth of our pumpkins.

Julie caught this image of our first open sunflower today. We probably won't win any records but most are still not budded up so we hit them good with 20-20-20 today to help them grow. The longer they don't flower, the taller they can grow.

See Zachary? Julie & Stephen are pruning off tertiary vines in places that are difficult for adults to reach.

Friday, July 13 View Page
Besides weeding, pruning & pollinating; we also have an issue with rabbits. This deer fencing works fine for deer. But since it's not wire reinforced, the rabbits have been chewing right through it.

Rabbit insurance. We added this poultry netting all around today. While not buried like the deer fence, we're hoping the rabbits get the message & stay out. Julie & Stephen were a BIG help attaching all of the hundreds of wire ties we used to secure it.

Here is an interesting situation. This is my 281.6 from 2004. The cross was 845 Bobier cutting x 842 Eaton. In the past it has grown fruit from cream to orange in color but this one looks like it's throwing all GREEN. This was a backup plant that we put almost no effort into. I had actually planned to pull it until now.

500 Northrup x 981 Zunino 36DAP CI = 126.5 SS = 79.3 EE = 76 OTT = 281.8 EST = 477 lbs This fruit is growing like a pancake - very low. We had a blanket on this one last night. Temp down to 53 after a sudden heavy rain as the cold front moved in. This resulted in some ferocious winds. We lost the roots on a few secondary vines. Starting to see a little Powdery Mildew now.

Saturday, August 18 View Page
1370 Rose x 981 Zunino 40DAP CI = 122 SS = 89 EE = 83.5 OTT = 294.5 EST = 550 lbs The oldest leaves are shot. Frequent insect sprays (6 already) are taking their toll. Powdery Mildew is starting. Wind damage was minimal last night but the sheet blew off so this pumper took the full effect of the temperature shift. Both pumpkins are averaging 20 lbs/day.

Harlan & Rick are making this look too easy but this is a breath holding moment for two kids....and their dads.

On the way up we get to inspect & clean the bottom. Flat & solid just as we'd hoped. TP1 never had the benefit of sand or mill fabric. She grew right on top of plain patch soil so we all breath a sigh of relief.

Friday, September 14 View Page
Despite a nerve rattling 5 minutes, Harlan & Rick really made a difficult task very easy. We still have four more pumpkins in here. To use a tractor would have required removing the fence in which case deer would have free reign until repairs were made.
