Well The 783 Daletas has been directly seeded in the ground of the greenhouse. Soil Heating cable is 12" deep and the soil temp at 8" is 78 degrees. I will be starting the 455 Andrews, 869 Calai, 884 Calai, and 1049 Koch early next week. The plants will each get a source of heat for the chilly nights yet to come, and soil heating cables.

Tuesday, April 29 View Page
Yesterday I put the 455 Andrews, 869 Calai, 884 Calai, and 1049 Koch in 6" peat pots. Place them in an styrofoam shipping container with the heating pad turned on low. I would like to thank all the growers who gave me these great seeds again. Then also wish everyone a great season, just not quite as well as mine. Shannon

Well The 783 Daletas did not germinate, after 10 days at 85 degrees not even a whisker of a root. Going on Day 6 for the 884 Calai. The 455 andrews, 1049 Koch, and 869.5 are up and healthy looking. Going to have to start some back ups for those that did germinate. :(

Thursday, May 8 View Page
Well it has not been such a lucky year for germinating this year. The 783 Daletas Swelled than stopped, The 884 Calai I believe was immature. When I peeled it open, the endosperm was dry and brown. The 1049 Koch germinated but failed to get a tap root, although it is still fighting to survive. Started a 943 Kenndey to go in place of the 783( it better be Orange Wayne :) Will throw a 451 Engel in the spot that was designated for the 884. Plus I started a 494 Nueville* to replace the 1049. On the good side of things the 455 Andrews is thriving in the greenhouse. It has huge cotyledons, and is starting its first leaves. The 869 seems to be happy in the hoophouse. It gets a night light, and has heat cables to stay snuggly warm. Got to come up with a thermostatic type vent that open and close next year.

I forgot to mention the 801.5 Stelts clone is to really good. It has a nice little female forming at about 10 feet. Hmmm if I get a male to bloom at the same time? Do I pollinate this baby for the Fair?

Friday, May 9 View Page
I planted the 953 Langevin to go in place of 884 Calai, although I had planned to put one of my own there. I had room for 5 orange and thats what I am going with. So its the 455 Andrews, 869 Calai, 943 Kennedy, and 953 Langevin. The 494 Nueville will be planted in the other patch, where the compost bins has been for three years.

I need to get the Canoe out of the Garage, to get to the Pumpkin Patch. In the future forecast, more showers. This just in "Flood Warning" ya think. Carrie you have any of that rice left? On a sunnier note the 943 Kennedy, and 494 Nueville are popping up. Along with the long gourds(watch out Clarence).

Saturday, May 17 View Page
Well the 953 Langevin did not make it, The 1049 Koch is still hanging in there. No true leaves yet, still hoping it pulls through. Threw a 1074 Calai in a pot on the germination table, after soaking it in peroxide and kelp mix. It has not been a good year for pumpkin germination for me. I am beginning to think it is the fafra growers mix, but all my other 100's of seedlings are fine. Pictures of the 455 Andrews, 869.5 Calai, 943 Kennedy, 494 Nueville, along with the 801.5 Stelts clone are coming. The Cloned plant does not care for the warmer 70 degree temps we are getting. Poor thing summer has not even started.

Here is the 455 Andrews, (note to self next year, the nice little enclosure looks like a good cage for a 6 year old to put little chickens)Little bit of leaf damage, but the plant looks healthy.

1074 Calai in its little cheap greenhouse enclosure. Seems to like it. I have to get the irrigation lines put in the patch this weekend, before I go to Lake Nipigon next week.

Saturday, June 14 View Page
Got back from Canada today, the fishing was great. Lost a bunch of little cleos to those mean Lake Nipigon Pikes. Did Land a 38 1/2 incher. Limited out on walleyes one day. Had a real lunker, threw the bait at the boat. We managed to catch one nice Speckled (brookie for us americans). Seen some big ones one the shoals in the big lake. Caught a 35 inch northern way out in the big lake, thought I had done something right and managed to hook a laker. Sure was a clean fish, tasted good too. Came home, Pumpkins are doing fine, although they are thirsty. Someone Manged to break the pipe on the irrigation system. Will get some pics posted soon.

Hmmm. This little doe, just crossed between the house and the pumpkin patch. Then proceeded to eat of a bunch of sweet corn, before She wasd spooked off.

All the plants are looking great. 455 Andrews got a touch of UV burn when we moved the large hoop house off of it. 801.5 Stelts clone was sucessfully pollinate last Saturday and has a pumpkin set at 15 feet. Things are really starting to take off now. Got to get some pictures soon. :)

Here is the 943 Kennedy, very vigorous plant. it is almost two week younger than the others and gaining quick.

Friday, June 27 View Page
The last but not least update, is the 455 Andrews. the main vine is growing fine. Secondaries are a little slow, could be the fact it was in the big hoophouse with 80% light transmission. Leaves are still huge, along with the stump. Little chicks are calling this plant Mama.. Any time the rooster sounds his warning...its ass over tea kettle to the 455.

Pollinated a female about 12 feet out on the 869 Calai with a handful of males from the 455 Andrews this morning. I had some males covered on the 801 for this purpose but decided to be different. It lookes the the 455 X 801 is not going to take, will have to try on the next female.

Wednesday, July 9 View Page
Pollinated the 934 Kennedy with the 869 Calai today. Males were a little slow to produce pollen, since it was only 52 degrees out.

Saturday, July 12 View Page
Had a fun relaxing day today. Pumpkins look like they are set on the 869 Calai(869 x455), 934 Andrews(934 x 869), 494 Nueville(x self), and the nice round pumpkin on the 801.5 Stelts clone. The 455 has only had one female to speak of, makes me nervous as the main has terminated into a bunch of tendrils, So I am training one of the end secondaries for the main now. Which has a few females. In the afternoon I went to Brigittes Graduation Party. Had some delicious smoked turkey, and drank lots of beer. Then Flamingo season opened in the Jim Falls area. There was one beautiful pink one out about 275 yards, by the pond. She was brave and didn't even flinch, as the bullets wizzed by. 50 shots and a few beers later, with no sure hits. The flamingo still stood, only to be saved by the falling sun. It was later confirmed after sunset that we should have been using a different round. Because she was full of holes. Had fun, cant wait until I have the opportunity again.

Wednesday, July 16 View Page
Pollinated 2 455 5 lobed females today with some 801 males. Had to go with sidevines since the main terminated into a snarly mess of tendrils. Still a supper healthy plant with thick huge vines. The 1074 was not ready yet :( its just waiting for RockFest to begin to get fertilized.

Today I Pollinated 2 1074 Calai x self, and a few more 455 x 801.5. Plants are doing good, Powdery mildew seems to be under control on the Stelts Clone.

Here is what I mean about trying to grow on its blossom end. I was using the stryrofoam underneath to try and change its pattern. It just seemed to make it want to grow more the opposite way. Nice shaped pumpkin. My Diary says this pumpkin was pollinated on the 21st of June/ My notes say June 24th. We will go with 27 days I guess.

Tuesday, July 22 View Page
Here is a picture of the 494 nueville X self pollinated on July 14th. Only 8 days old and 22" in Circumference. Think I screwed up and should have put this baby in the giant patch. So it could get the attention a rapid grower like this deserves. Seems to like the old compost pile. Have to remember to try and baby it a little more:)

Hmmmmm? Dont know what to think of this bug. I noticed it today while watering. I looked for Flamingo tracks, didn't see any. Although the stake that this bug was on looks simular to that of a flamingo leg. Going to have to have a rumble in the patch when Joe has his rematch with Tom. April vs the culprit.

The Pumpkin formally known as "Bubbles" has requested I change her name. So from now on she will be known as "Snowball". This is as long as she keeps up the progress. Day 24 78 + 57 + 53 = 188in or 145lbs

Fighting Powdery Mildew. Applying a copper hydroxide solution. The Orchard spray kept it in check for so long, but the cool nights and dew have made it the winner.

PorkChop on the 455 split open on the blossom end. Its square blockiness proved to be to much for it. Not to worry there is a back up. The 934 Kennedy is rapidly being overcome by powdery mildew. I am throwing every bit of arsenal I can muster to stop this dreaded mildew. Concentrating on saving the younger growth. We Need rain bad, the jack o lantern batch is hurting in a bad way. 50% of the plants have died, the corn is shuting down.

In this Corner we have the 934 Kennedy. Just a young whipper snapper at 35 days old. Measuring in at 103 + 69+ 73 = 245OTT or 308est lbs. After a grueling battle with April. She has agreed to keep the foliage in the yard. Was not cheap though, cost me a new laminate floor in the kitchen. Powdery mildew seems to be under control. Center of the plant has died out.

Things are cooling off here, pumpkins are still growing.:) 934 Kennedy C=118 + 72 + 73 = 263OTT or 378lbs est loosing it pretty white color to the typical off white with shades of salmon and green 1074 Calai C=125_+ 82 + 86= 293OTT or 518lbs est This pumpkin is still round and turning beautiful orange. 869 Calai C=133+ 79 + 82= 294OTT or 523 est This pumpkin has shoulders like a football player, and is running neck and neck with the 1074. I think they are aware only one will be going to Nekoosa. INTRODUCING "Heifer" 455 Andrews C=101 + 62+ 61 = 224OTT or 238lbs est this pumpkin is not too old. Cantelouping and running low to the ground. The Bad news is the long gourd has broken it support vines that were holding it at the top of the trellis. So it was touching the ground. The battle is not over yet!!!!!!!!!

Here is my Squashkin on the 934 Kennedy. Its not quite sure what it wants to be when it grows up. Hmmm the dilema now is to I still exhibit this one at the Oktoberfest, or enter it as a squash at Nekoosa. C=123+78+76=277 OTT or 440lbs est.

Then we have my baby " ButterCup" on the 869 Calai. She is a cross between the 869 and 455 Andrews. Still going strong with those big wide shoulders. I am debating on bringing this baby to Oktoberfest since the 1074 Calai is gaining more inches than her. C=135+80+82=297 OTT or 539lbs Est.

Here is "Buttercup" up at the Oktoberfest. I was unsure about my decision from cutting her from the vine. The reception and comments I have received has changed my mind. I have had a ton of people asking questions. Had to argue with a guy about feeding them milk...lol Had one man insist it was plastic or wax, or a concrete form of a pumpkin expanded. He only became a believer after I recut a section of the vine. Even after I let him thump it a couple of times.

Since harvesting "Buttercup" last week for the Oktoberfest. I have put all my pumpkins in one basket. I feel "Blossom" on the 1074 Calai here will give me the personal best I am looking for. I have been afraid to tape her, and find out that it stopped growing. We will see what happens.

This is "SnowBall" on my 934 Kennedy. As you can see the beautiful white color has faded a little. I have know doubt what this little baby will be classified as at the weigh off. I would like to send a special thanks out to April(Nymph). Who has learned if you cant beat them join them. For all the times when you took the time to care about them stupid pumpkin plants. I look forward to the 2004 Season. Anyone have any locks for the faucet spigots..:) I would also like to give a sincere thanks to my friend Brigitte who if my 1074 weighs light may woop my ass. She filled in for April and carved and sculpted that pumpkin like she knew what she was doing. I had faith in her all the time. I think she even learned to polka..1.2.3.4.5.6.. and now knows the words to "Puff the Magic Dragon. You had to be there to understand this. Shannon

I would just like to throw a little endorsement out to the Drammatic Company for their support. They are trying to break into this fish and kelp market. They have offered alot of support, and tips. To organically control the bugs. They also like to listen to what us Pumpkin growers are looking for in a fertilizer.

Last but not least, I must again be the meek one, as my long gourd measured 88.5". Clarence narrowly beat me by an inch and a half. We all know if that puppy would have been straight. I would have kicked his butt. I have to go build my Long Gourd fortress now. 15 feet high with a built in ladder to climb for pollination. I will be victorious in 2004. Here is Mr Smiley carved in the 601 Engel. The inside walls have been shaved to about an inch thick. Clay tools came in very habdy for shaving and shaping. If I were to do it any different, I would make a bigger wider gouge. 3/4" was to small on someoff the large surfaces. It was treated with 5 Kool-Aid lemonade packs in 1 quart water...Some pretty strong stuff.

Here is the finished look.. Note the 300watt light is allowed to come through in the recessed areas. Hmmm seen a 600watt flourecent light at the store? There are also 15 watt light bulbs in his eyes. As normal pictures do this guy no Justice... Need a little back lighting to provide detail.... It wont be lit with the larger lights until next week other wise I think we would have pumpkin pie before the big H day.

Here is my quick Jack o lantern carving on my 543 Engel. The walls were extremely thick, with only about 9-12 inches of cavity space.
