Today is the day I'm starting my diary. This will be my first year growing giant pumpkins. I am starting with 2, one of which will be the 1432 Northrup (998 Pukos X 1385 Jutras). I have not yet decided what I will grow for the second pumpkin. My patch will be 35' X 35', with 2 pumpkins growing diagonally from the centre in the Christmas Tree pattern.

This shows some raking that I have done to prepare the patch to be sprayed prior to tilling the soil. It would have been great to have this done last fall, but then I didn't know that this is what I would be doing spring 2010. So, I'm making the best of the situation.

Today, I built a trellis for my long gourds; hopefully, it will stand up. I started by going to the woods and getting some poles. It is roughly 12' high, 4' wide, and 8' deep. The next step will be to cover it with wire.

On February 24, 2010, I planted these Javelot seeds for my long carrots. They sprouted March 4th. The pictures have been taken today. They are planted in 2' lengths of PVC pipe. Soon, I will add more pipe to keep them growing.

This is a giant cabbage, Alaska Giant. The seeds were planted March 31st, and this is the first one through the soil. These have been reported to grow to as much as 100lbs.

These are Ailsae onions that were planted on February 24th. I ordered this seed from the UK and it was late arriving, so they do not have as much of a start as I would have liked them to have. Also, the cats gnawed them down - DAMN cats!

This is a Big Zac tomato that I planted on March 22,2010. I might even plant one in an upside down planter just to say I did. Yes, I know, they will have to be supported, just haven't quite figured that step out yet.

These are Naga Jolokias and Peter Peppers. Last year I grew 600 hot peppers. I researched and found 20 of the hottest varieties to grow. The hottest pepper available is the Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper) which I had really good success growing. This year I will probably only grow 300-400 peppers.

This is the row cover I built that will eventually go over my pumpkins. Hopefully I will get them out in early May but it is weather permitting. The row cover is 10' X 5' and 4' high. I still have to add a window opener in each end (That will be tommorow... Hopefully).

Added some horse manure and compost to where I'm planting my long gourds. Looks good!
