90% of the leaves on my marrow are looking good and healthy except for a few here and there that are scaring me. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Fungus or bacteria?

This is my buch type Black Beauty zucchini tap roots it decided to sprout. Been growing zucchini's for years and never seen this happen. The plant has actually split in two also and has two "vine" type stalks growing two diff ways. These plants were from a saved 23" zucchini from last year that I close pollinated myself so I know is not cross-pollinated with anything else. Anyone else ever seens taproots growing on bush variety plants like this?

A litte sad. I pollinated one of my Joynson marrows a few days ago, it grew to 3" and aborted. It wasn't really one I wanted to keep because it was on my smallest marrow plant but I'm still sad it didnt keep. Was only 10ft out from the stump. I'm waiting on pollinating a few that I found today on my large plant. Two nice looking females were spotted all the way out ain vine(about 22-25ft out).

Well I went out to the garden to do an actual measurement on my giant marrow today. As it sits the main is at pretty much 23' on the dot with a marrow at both the 21' and 22' mark. Hopefully I can get one of these wayyyyy out there to pollinate and take. Hopefully I can get atleast one good sized marrow from the plant as this is my first year of giant marrow growing. Its been a struggle. I have been battling cucumber beetles, downy mildew, too much rain, hot ass 90 degree days and now I have been finding squash bugs. Uhhggg this is a crappy growing year. Did find smething strange. Been spraying fungicides one every plant in the garden from the start. Marrow looks like it has downy mildew but my giant black beauty zucchini's and crooknecks show no sign of DM whatsover. I dont understand.

Well this morning I was sad and happy. I was sad because one of my marrow way out on the big plant on the main vine aborted before I even had a chance to pollinate it which was the one at 21'. There is still one at the 22' mark which looks like it getting larger. I was happy because I came home last night and noticed the little 3" female on the small plant was puckered up and ready for the next morning. Picked a few new puckered up males, took em inside and woke up this morning and pollinated her with two males. Its not on the big plant but at this point I'll settle for any marrow lol. Pollinated her at pretty much 7am on the dot and it was in the low to mid 60's. We'll see here in a day or two if she wants to gain some weight. Crossing my fingers. Plants are grown from a 74# Joynson marrow. I have some really good seeds from Brad Wursten but I dont want to waste seeds that good the first time growing a marrow. Glad I didnt plant the Wurtsen seeds this year with all this horrible weather and DM outbreaks the counties around us.

Well so far so good looks like the advice on pollinating earlier in the morning worked. Marrow I pollinated the other night grew about 2" in one day. Have another one to pollinate in the morning. Both of these are on the smaller plant I was going to use only for males but oh well I want a marrow and I want one now! haha! There is a nice sized one 22' out still on the large plant that looks like it will be ready in a few days. I'm thinking of trying a cross with one of my black beauty zucchini's with a marrow just to see what I can get from it next year. Black marrows? :)

Pollinated two more females on the marrow this morning. One of them was 22' out on the main on the big plant. I'm excited about that one I hope it keeps! The one I pollinated a few days ago is 4.5" as of this morning.

Well all the females on my marrows were a no go. Mid to high 90's is not helping. I have one to pollinate in the morning and this next week will be in the low 80's so hopefully I can get one of these to set. All these aborts are making me very sad.

Well this season is sucking ALOT. I don't think my marrow will produce anything even after having a main almost 40 feet long. This is the year of aborts I guess. Damn Ohio heat and humidity! On another note my pink Brandywines are growing like crazy and are 6' tall. My tall corn is probably about 12' tall and still growing pretty strong. I pollinated myself a black beauty zucchini today for fair. Last year my biggest was 23" long, hopefully I can squeeze a 30"+ one outta the plant. This plant gets stronger and bigger every year and is actually trying to vine and grow secondaries like a vining plant. Has taproots under every leaf node and everything. Leaf nodes are about 3" apart so there are taproots under every 3" of vine. Bushtype zucchini plant that is about 3-4 feet long. Well atleast this thing isn't aborting lol
I am already planning for next year. No marrows! I'm looking for good genetics in a giant green squash if anyone has some spares they would like to get rid of shoot me an e-mail. [email protected]

Noticed on my marrow a bunch more fruits are forming along with one at the 44' mark and a good few on secondaries. Not like it matters they will probably all abort anyways LOL
I did do a big compost tea soak on all my plants....giant maize, pink brandywines, zucchini, crooknecks and of course the marrows. I'll give these marrows a few more weeks and if none of the pollinations take I'm pulling them.

Well good news for me...I hope. Been doctoring the marrows alot lately. The smaller plant is growing very well. The main vine is growing right through my compost pile and has rooted two or three nodes into it. Vine has been growing crazy ever since is climbed into the compost. Going to have two to pollinate on the small marrow. Yay! Onto the big plant. The main vine has reached to almost 50ft....no thats not a typo...50ft LOL Its circling the outside of half my garden. The good news is there is a good sized female at the(about) 44' mark and another 2 leaf nodes further from that one I hope to get one of these girls to set concidering all the rooting thats behind it. 40+ feet of vine to feed it if it takes. Both marrows are doing quite better. They have got a dose of CO2 applied via foliar, some good ole 0-0-50 worked into the dirt around the stump and the dirt around the vine about 5ft away from the stump and LOTS of compost tea drenches. The way the plants are doing now after all the compost tea I'm starting to think all these aborts were mainly caused by all the nutrients being washed out of the soil after all the crazy rain we had in the beginning of the year. Please ohhhhhhh please let one of these take!

Well I had to cut the tip of my larger marrow off today. Had to cut off a whole 10ft or so. Its ok I still have 40ft of vine left LOL
There was a rotting spot which I think maybe the start of gummy stem blight. I have been battling this spot on the main for over a week and it was just getting worse.
I do have a big handful of females to pollinate on some side vines so its ok I guess.
I will give this bigger marrow one more week to keep a set fruit or its getting pulled.
Already planning for next year. If someone has some giant green squash seeds they wanna get rid of I would more than happy to take them off your hands. E-mail me if you have some spares.

This is marrow #1 on a sidevine of the bigger plant. Its 5 days old and is 9" long. Also have 3 others on sidevines. Not sure which ones I am keeping yet. Going to wait a little more while and see who's growing nicer.
Couple others were pollinated a few days ago and are also doing well so far. One is on a sidevine a little further down and is only 1" shorter than the one in this pic.
For personal record. Marrow#2: 4.75"
Marrow#3: 8"
Marrow#4: 3.5"(only been pollinated for two days)
Also...yes I know this one pictured is in the grass right outside the garden. The plant got so big the sidevines are going into the yard. They will have boards or styrofoam to lay on out of the grass. I'm crossing my fingers I'll get atleast one nice one now that fruits are setting.

Well the marrows are still growing pretty good.
I culled the #2 and #4 marrow, they were not growing as fast as the others, so I am left with #1 and #3.
#1 marrow is now at 11" with a 14.5" circumference
#3 marrow is now at 10" and a 13" circumference
I was going to cull all but one but I though me having 40' of vine that should be enough to feed 2-3 good sized marrows.
Found another female yesterday morning on a sidevine all the way out at the 40' mark of the main and 5ft out the sidevine its growing on. It pretty much came out of nowhere so this one was open pollinated. Seems to be a strong little female, I hope the bee's did their job well and it sets!

Newly pollinated marrow 40+ foot out and it looks like she is going to keep so far. Too bad she is open pollinated.
Do the math. 40' foot of vine feeding a single fruit. ;)
I'll wait about 5 days. If she starts gaining weight the other two are being culled right away. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one!

Came from outside. Found about 7 SVB's grubs in the large marrow plant. Biggest grub was found actually in the smaller marrow plant and was only 1/4" long. All the others were the size of a baby maggot. About 1/8" long. Next year I will be using a systemic pesticide and a SVB trap. Stupid POS SVB's!!

Culled #1 today. It made me sad to do so but the other one was growing alot fast. Was 3-4 days younger than this one and passed this one in growing. I may be culling #2 also because #2 is on a secondary 15' or so down the vine but there is a newly pollinated one that is on a secondary 40ft down. That's a no-brainer on which one to keep. One 15' down or 40' down LOL
Daughter had to pose with it. She was also sad about me cutting it off. :(

Well its been a busy few weeks or so. I lost my job 3 weeks ago. Found a new job here a week ago and been working my ass off and haven't had time to post anything.
The marrow on my large plant was cut off a week ago. It stopped growing at 40lbs. Plant was really old and needed pulled.
I pulled the big plant out due to rotting stump and vines and also cut the stump of the smaller plant.
Funny thing is though. I cut the stump of the smaller plant and now the plant literally "took off".
The plant is actually healthier now that there is no stump and there is actually a marrow growing pretty nicely 20' out on the main vine.
My big plant I could only get a marrow to take on a sidevine. Would be funny to see if this stump-less plant will grow a bigger marrow LOL
